some advice on how to go about doing it would be welcome. i tend to just chuck Hammerite on things, but id like these to look nice if possible.

So what balance of cheap/easy/good are you going for?

Scuff up, sand off rust and slap paint on. I use tractol machine enamel where I used to use hammerite. Self levels well, dries in 24h but takes a week or more to be fully hard. Once hard it lasts forever (it's what vintage tractors were painted with).

Strip off and paint at home. I've had good success with POR15. Prep is key so old paint needs to be off, rust is ok (POR = Paint over rust) as long as it's not loose. Etch the metal then paint of. It's a polyurethane coating rather than a paint which moisture cures even in shitty british weather, self levels beautifully and sticks like shit to a blanket. Also very tough. One of the dinky little cans would be plenty for that set of bars, which is a good thing because it's not cheap.

Or throw money at the problem until it goes away, Take them to the paint shop and get them blasted and either powdercoated or cerakoted depending on your budget.

They look powder coated like teh pannier racks on the skorpion I had briefly.

I hated them -the moisture got under teh coating and created lots of bubbles with inevitable rust underneath. I spent hours cracking the bubbles then trying to flatten ready for paint but powder is tough so it took ages..

If the powder coat is mostly good then flatten back the odd scrapes and paint over. If it isn't I'd burn the crap off.

I used Hammerite Smooth (-rattle can? Can’t remember) on the ZX6R’s bar ends and Renntech rack with very little preparation. They looked pretty good and have lasted well. Even I’m surprised.
