It’s my father in law’s bike, purchased last year.
I’m meant to be borrowing it for a road trip in two weeks time.

I tried to take it for a test ride today but came unstuck when I stalled it and the bike wouldn’t restart.

The bike hasn’t been used in a few weeks, but that’s normal.
I rolled it out of the garage, fired it up first time no bother. I pulled the side stand out so that I could go and get my helmet and gloves but the bike stalled. Apparently that’s normal for this bike? It won’t have the engine running with the side stand out even in neutral?
I tried to restart, but nothing happened. Turned off and on several times, but didn’t even hear the fuel pump priming.

So thinking it was the side stand switch, I cleaned the area up with carb cleaner and a stiff brush. No luck. Tried the relay switch, swapping it with the horn relay, all worked fine but still no luck. Plugged the battery charger in and it was showing 75%+.

It could be a red herring, but the previous owner confessed that the fuel filter needed doing and he hadn’t got round to it.

Any ideas on what to check next, or what the problem could potentially be, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

EDIT: we have looked at the manual for the bike and it says the engine should run with the side stand down. Father in law cannot remember if it’s ever been an issue before, he’s just always started it with the stand up.

If you cannot hear the pump priming then it's not the fuel filter.

The bike should only start and run with the stand down if it's in neutral. Try putting the stand up and starting it - there could be a problem with the neutral switch or wiring to it. Putting the stand up will allow it to start in gear.

You say "nothing happens". When you press the starter button, does it turn over and not fire, does it click and not turn over or does nothing at all happen?

Kill switch is in the run position?

You're right. After I had time to think on it last night this made more sense.

I tried all various combinations of the side stand being up/down, in gear, neutral etc.

When the starter button is pressed, nothing happens; no clicking, turning over, weak start etc. Literally nothing.

Kill switch is in the run position. Tried toggling this off and on several times as well.
