I left my bike locked and after just checking it, sometime today someone had tried to steal my tax disk! its got a crack and part of it has been ripped! filthy thieving scum! they dont even need it, just wanted to annoy me!

ARSEHOLES!

Now I need to buy a new tax disk cover, which is about 15 quid for a decent one!...could've been worse obviously, but annoying as hell.

I bet it was chavs too.

Tax disc theft is more of a problem with bikes than cars. Although it doesn't match their plate, unless actually examined closely it can go on any bike or car and pass as tax.

Just take the disc and carry it around in your wallet, if asked by police just explain that it's been tried to be nicked and so you're putting it in your wallet.

Stick your tax disc to the bike by wrapping it round the frame downtube and slapping a bit of clear sticky-backed plastic right round it. They can't get it off without tearing it (or long fingernails)

Here's the solution which I use btw. Scan your tax disk and cut it out. They are remarkably similar to the real thing. Unless you inspect it closely noone (including the law) will know the difference. If it gets nicked then just cut another copy out.
Should the law actually inspect it ansd see it's a copy (for which you can get done btw) .Pull out the original in your wallet and explain why you did it.
They'll tell you you shouldn't do it, and then carry on their merry way. Wink

SO why have a tax disc on your bike in the first place??

My tax disc isn't displayed on mine, I carry it in my Jacket
which BTW is perfectly legal.

I've had a couple stolen over the years but never again,
I was given some good advice when I was stopped by
the police/DVLA a few years back.

BTW, why spend so much on a tax disc holder?? Those
priced over £15 may look good but they can easily broken.
The £5 stainless Steel ones are cheaper and stronger.

Is it really perfectly legal to not display a tax disc? I always thought you could get done for NOT displaying it and I think it actually says that somewhere on the disc or at least I'm sure it used to.

As long as you can provide your tax disc on demand you are
in the clear. The police (bankers) can moan but can't really
nick you.

BUT you MUST carry it with you, put on your key ring which
is what some of my mates do.

If you get moaned at for not having it on your bike just say
why bother when some goit can nick it???

Again told this by a copper ( soo many times i have been Check up on)

If you do not have a tax disk displayed then you will get a letter/forms to fill out to prove you have a tax disk. But its allot more hassel lol.

( i had it on the right hand side, lol, was like, but it right there!!! )

By law it has to be displayed on the LHS (As you're sat on the bike) in front of where the rider sits and be visible. Mine's in the boot.
You only get a letter when some snotty parking attendant goes anal.
Personally I think you should pay for it on the net and just have their records updated. Or maybe when you buy your insurance?

got pulled recently for speeding. Whilst piggy was having fun sniffing round my bike he saw I had no tax disc on the bike. I told him I keep it indoors with my V5 so no scrote can nick it. He said I should really display it but he understood why I didn't. Didn't even give me a producer for it so he wasn't that fussed.

I've been thinking about this recently. Thanks for the advice. I just bought my new tax disc and my old one is still on the bike. I'll take the holder off tonight and put in a scanned and printed copy, then keep the real disc in my wallet. I was thinking of laminating the original so it doesn't get tatty in my wallet, but wasn't sure if this would damage the paper/hologram on the disc. Anybody tried this? Do you think it's worth adding a small note to the copy to say that this is not a real disc, so don't bother stealing it? The filthy chav might just slash my seat knock the bike over, or scratch the paint instead I suppose. Confused

Thanks. Smile

I don't know about laminating the original I wouldn't. Just keep it in a unused section of the wallet.
That did remind me though that I do laminate the copies I have on my bike to stop them getting wet in a cheap holder.

As for not displaying your tax disc. That is actually an offence as far as I'm aware.
