Is there a minimum age for pillions?

My eldest lad, age four, loves coming with me on the back of my moped. He can touch the footpegs, with both feet, and holds on quite safely, and obviously has a helmet that fits. Is it legal?
He's just started school, and wants me to take him on the bike.

This is the moped, it's alright to say it stands me at less than £400.

Nope no minimum age at the moment.

Does the helmet really /fit/ him? There was an incident recently with a small child and a helmet padded with newspaper...

As long as he has a legal helmet (that doesn't mean safe though...) and can touh both feet on the pegs and hold on OK, then its legal.

I would reccomend some sort of hand and foot protection too as a minimum. Smile

Yes, completely. But obviously you'd need to be rather more cautious than if you were "two-up with a grown-up". Rolling Eyes

Some woman was recently pushing for a ban on under 16's riding pillion after her 8-year-old fell off and was killed, which is purely a kneejerk reaction, and unlikely to be made law.

Cautious isn't strong enough, my lass would ensure any accident that happened with him on the back would be fatal (for me!). Although the moped is quite modified, I ride it like it's restricted when he's on. He loves it though, sat on the back telling me to "blow him off dad", what do you do?

It was slightly more complicated, the kid wasn't on the back of a parents bike, it was someone (can't remember if it was a friend or a neighbour or something) not family and without the parents permission.

As long as they can sit on the back, reach the footpegs and know about what to do and not do as pillion they'll be okay. As said a helmet which doesn't fit well isn't good, it can cause more injuries than it can save, if it is too loose and the child lands on their head it can twist around their head into their neck.

I would say that if he is just wanting you going faster and to be riding in way which wouldn't be safe with a 4 year old on the back, then he isn't ready to be going on the back yet as he isn't actually taking on board the dangers of being pillion on a bike, so would be more likely to do something which would cause injury or a crash so not until he is able to take on board the logic and safety aspects.

Faster and faster is somewhat relative in this case, I suspect flipping off the back due to massive acceleration is unlikley to be a major issue for example.

Just do what folks always used to do and tie him to you with a bit of rope round both your waists, cannae fall off or muck about then Wink

I generally try to make sure that the pillion is at least as well protected as me, if not better.

Though if it's just a quick trip down to the shops with a biking friend I know well then I some times ignore this.

Erm, the same could be said of lots of adults as well. Could also say the same about kids in a car; though they do have more things like child proof doors, there's still windows to hang out of etc Smile.

it would be a good idea to get you son some protective gear, as if your going to school in it there will be a lot of massive 4x4's ready to kill you both.

That thing were the kid was killed i think it was a family friend, and he had been out load of times with the guy and it was just an accident when it happend but the family went nuts and tried to stop anybody riding pillion, but it is over now it happens all the time when sombody young is killed, its always ban this or ban that

just out of interest, l,m guessing you have a full bike licence to take a pillion so why do you ride a moped not a real bike?

A full car licence issued before a certain date is also a full moped licence. That would be my guess as to how he has a full moped licence.

correct,
full car licence + moped = no CBT + no L's + pillion.

Wouldn't mind doing it though.
How much does it cost to do bike test? (Roughly)
Would anyone recommend anywhere up North?

I checked this out on the highway code online version.

You MUST NOT carry more than one pillion passenger and he/she
MUST sit astride the machine on a proper seat and should keep
both feet on the footrests.

Law RTA 1988 sect 23
