Well ideally when I pass my test I would like to get a sports 400 for next spring/summer. Providing I keep a clean sheet I should have two years no claims. However, after talking with my instructor today he says I have no chance of getting it insured due to my age and being in NI. If this is indeed true what other bikes would be a possibility apart from the 500s (still wouldn't say no to a GPZ though)?

Hi

With NI insurance you will be lucky to get insured on anything such as a 400 or 500. Sorry.

All the best

Yep, NI insurance will cost you at least double the same cover on the mainland in a dodgy area.

All the best

I've heard that Hanson&Robertson are quite competitive...I was originally quoted £1300 for a CBF500, they got it down to £690.

Insurance prices don't mean much unless you know what type of cover they were for. Hillakus you need to call around lots of insurance companies (get Bike Trader and call every single company in the back) and once you have the cheapest few call back around asking them if they can go any lower to beat the quote of £xxx you got elsewhere. Repeat until they all say no.

CIA are normally good for young people.

Just tried an online quote from h+r, they still give me a pretty expensive quote of about £1780 for a 125. So far the best I've found for the same deal is Norwich Union of all places, who quoted me at £1200. Interesting eh?

It seems that the insurance brokers are all against us young'uns eh?

Online quotes aren't useful for anything other than for comparing insurance prices for different bikes. They always come out with stupid quotes so they're not even worth wasting your time getting them. As I said get bike trader and phone around all the insurance companies and then phone back around etc. etc. etc. (if you don't know what I mean by etc. etc. I have explained all in my last post).

All insurance companies do charge more for younger people yes, thats because younger people have more claims and so you're more likely than a 40yr old to cost them money.

Got a quote off Bennetts online as a guide, that was me saying I just turned 18 with a full license and 2 years NCB - £980. Though Bennetts quoted me 800 odd for the AR which everyone else quoted under £300. Maybe if I hunt round I could get it for under 700 at 18 that seems reasonable.

You can often find that a vfr400 will be insured by a 17 year old cheaper than an rs125, aprilia rs125's are the most crashed bike in britain, guess why, becuase they can be ridden on a provisional.

Pass your restricted access test and for about the same price as insuring an rs125 you can insure a bandit6 Shocked, the bandit's can be picked up dirt cheap too, restricted like it has to be will still even beat an rs125 but de-restricted i think they push like 80bhp, that is like 135-40 mph isn't it?

Online quotes are a waste of time for anything other than comparing what insurance costs on different bikes will be. You need to use the phone to get your insurance cheaply, ring lots of companys then ask them if they can go lower to be the quote of £xxx. Repeat until they won't.

Agreed. Being age 23 and having just gotten my first bike, my initial quote online was for $4,000/yr. Got myself a real live agent on the case and she got it down to $1024 per year. Best idea I'd had in a while, calling her. Thumbs Up

yea the only reason i got a 400 instead of a 125 was the £900 difference on insurance, which i used to pay for my test Very Happy

internet sites are only useful for cross quoting bikes. my best internet site quote for a nc21 was £795 and i thought that was great so i phoned up to arrange it and was quoted £400 Shocked so i was like...ok Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
