My road Tax was due on the 1st of December and today I got around to going to the PO with my documents to get my tax disc.
The guy behind the counter told me that they can't backdate them over a month anymore. He could have given me one starting 1st Jan, but then what happened in December would be between me and the DVLA.
He said I should go to my local DVLA office to get one backdated to Dec 1st.
He also asked if I'd been riding it in the past month or if it had been parked on any public roads. I said it had been on a private driveway since then.
Does anyone know how long you have to be tax/SORNless before they issue a fine? I have this horrible thought of going to the DVLA office and being fined for either not having tax during Dec or not having declared SORN. ____________________ About me|@Major_Grooves|My company|Digg|Flickr |

if your bike is not to be taxed for any time it now requires SORN
and they want to charge again when you retax
i presume this is to clobber the people that only tax 6 months ____________________ "still no idea where poohsticks bridge is"

I'm hoping that if I go in and say I want to back-tax to begin from Dec 2004 I will be okay. The guy in the PO said that the people at teh DVLA office can do that. ____________________ About me|@Major_Grooves|My company|Digg|Flickr |

Just get the tax from the 1st of Jan and dont worry about it.
If the fine comes through the fine comes through then you worry about it. ____________________ The BCF's very own Party boy! Though he's getting old and feeling it!

Try the online service its quite neat! You can tax and declare sorn from the comfort of your own backside! No more queuing behind wrinklies waiting for their bus passes. Sadly it also makes it hard to blag your way out of a tight spot Sorry mate! ____________________ Here comes the summer! |

Hi
They don't care about the excuse. It is an absolute offence without even any appeals procedure. Tax it from January (if it was not on the road in December) and pay the fine, and remember that the disorganised gits in Swansea are only interested in getting as much cash off you as possible (hence why they offer to take a bribe not to go to court, although they call it a reduced penalty).
All the best

I had exactly the same thing.
When I went to the post office, the guy said he couldn't backdate it and was being funny - so all I did was go back a little bit later to a different person and bought a new one starting that day!! ____________________ Love is 1050cc |

i had no problems getting a bike taxed that hadnt been taxed for about 6 months, but i think that may have been sorn'ed and such. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

I have been sent a total of four SORN fines over the last two years. I filed them in the bin and have not heard anything since. Now I am not suggesting this as a course of action but I have never heard of someone having the non-payment of a sorn fine being taken further. In my oppinion it is an oppertunistic attempt to extort money out of motorists, they just send them out and hope you will send a cheque back.
I may be proved wrong in this assumption but haven't been to-date.
Anyone know of someone who has been taken to court for non-payment of a SORN fine? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

i forgot to do a SORN for a scooter ive got
(been trying to sell it for bloody months)
i only used it for a month dam thin scared me to death so brought a 125 enduro thing instead (which just got bloody pinched )
anyway after i got a letter from DVLA i phoned them and told them i posted one when my tax ran out for it they wanted to fine me £40
so they told me to write a letter explaning this and send in another so i did,1 month later another letter saying as i still didnt send a SORN in then there going to fine me £80!
so this time i went to DVLA in person with another SORN and another letter,i explained to a woman there what had happend (this was going on for 3-4 months!)
she said it happens all the time specialy with sorns as DVLA actualy looses a lot of them in house!
so she told me not to worry as i wont have to pay any fines now!
i then had a letter from DVLA saying they had the SORN and it lasts for 12months and that was the end of it!
so best if you wait for a letter phone them up and tell them you did post it off,but you will post another as soon as poss.
they told me allso i should have done it when i had my reminder 2 weeks before the tax ran out
(which i didnt know they did and never got anyway)
which helped my case too
