Cant comment on new BMWs or cars, but the old R series were excellent tourers from all accounts, including my dad. He has an old R75/5 and has been bloody everywhere on it with very few problems, and the one big problem he did have mechanically was his own fault (imagine comments of "oooh thats what the little pipe was for") Laughing

I used to work for a company that was contracted to do work for BMW specifically, nitride and oxidize shafts for their cars.

The company who made these shafts (Federal Mogul) were under direct control of BMW as this was basically their only job. The efficiency of the Germans I had contact with extended only to nosing through my desk contents and demanding why I had an Acoustics Book in my top drawer.

When it actually came to checking our samples and results (very important as we had been having massive problems, mainly due to their decision to change material without informing us Shocked) they pretended to be very efficient (i.e. demanded dates and samples from so long ago they had actually over rusted Laughing ) yet missed some of the most important points.

Overall... I think BMW are rubbish - especially if you buy one with one of our cam shafts in! They're knowledge of the process was poor, their engineering ability shocking, and their efficiency - none existant. On arrogance scales, however, they were way up there with Schumacher!

I'm an Architect and the German construction industry is a model of efficiency, they have a proper apprentice system and the workers take great pride in their work, which is a refreshing change from old blighty.

Generally in my contact with germans I have noted they have great respect for rules and regulations.

Yep, rules, regulations and beer. Wink

Did anyone see the documentary on BMW when they were in the process of buying Rover?

Showed the blokes working on the track and the free drinks machine they have at their stations. They could wonder over and pour themselves a liter of finest ale! Shocked

Looks good to me. Wink

Have been over to Germany and worked alongside a few.
They're all right, you just have to appreciate the German sense of humour (yes Wink they do have one).

They can also be Schumacher like with their arrogance, but then you could argue the Brits attitude is 'we're so cr*p, we're just grateful to get by'. I know which I'd prefer and which is most likely to get the Olympic games here (even if it's in the wrong part of the country Wink).

Oh, and I wouldn't say they're more efficient, just more methodical, which I have to agree could lead to more efficiency as in less failures/mistakes.

Looking forward to getting the chance to go back in my own time on the bike and sampling the sights and wine down the Rhine valley.
