The Police BikeSafe London Team will be riding a Honda X8 49cc moped (stopping only to re-fuel) from John o'Groats to Lands End via London between Friday 29th October 2004 and Monday 1st November 2004 for two UK registered charities.
Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City, Herts - providing care for patients and their families living with cancer and other other serious illnesses AND also 'ASPIRE' - Association for Spinal Injury and Research, Rehabilitation and Reintegration, which is linked with the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Middx. There are more than 40,000 people in Britain with spinal cord injuries. 1200 people are injured each year - more than 3 every day. 36.8% of injuries are following road traffic accidents and 10.6% involve riders of motorcycles).
The BikeSafe team will take it in turns to ride the moped (about 1000 miles at an average speed of 25 mph, at least 40 hours continuous riding), as well as two marked police motorcycles used as outriders and also the three support vans. Shocked

If anyone would like to make a donation so that as much money as possible is raised for the two worthy charities above they would be very grateful. Very Happy Any support would be appreciated. However, in return for a sizeable donation you can advertise your brand or company on the support vans which will accompany the moped throughout. In addition to all the usual publicity surrounding such an event it will also be linked to the 175th Anniversary of the founding of the Metropolitan Police so it should have a very high profile with a large amount of publicity throughout.

For more information and to make a donation you can look at www.BikeSafe-London.co.uk and follow the link.
Cool

I haven't got the details, but someone we know did this trip with a MCN journalists... on Enfields I think, so not much faster Smile... and less reliable. They got a double middle page spread in MCN.

However they didn't get any kind of support vehicles and it was only them, on each of their own bikes (ok, I think they foind places to stay at night, but still the police seem to be being a bit soft here.)

It is not necessarily a waste of tax payers money, and in fact would cost comparatively little.

The Bikesafe team will no doubt be giving their time for free, as they usually do. The bikes used for Bikesafe are generally police bikes which are no longer used for traffic duties due to age, or are bikes which are paid for by sponsors.

The cost of petrol will presumably come out of the proceeds raised, and the vehicles will have been taxed and MOT'd regardless of the trip.

There is also the publicity which will hopefully be raised for the Bikesafe scheme, which would cost a fortune if it was to be paid for.

Personally, I have already sponsored the boys, who are all bikers themselves outside of work. I wish them all the best.

Thumbs Up
