Does anyone know anything about the regulations for riding a quad on the road? ie, helmet law, L plates, engine sizes and the like. Theres a young lad at work just started coming to work on it, no helmet, no L plates & as far as I know he only has a provisional license. Shocked

Well they have just made Quads road legal, providing they comply with the regulations (lights, plate, MOT etc...) BUT he should have L plates on regardless and since it comes more under cars than bikes would not be able to drive/ride one with a provisional licence.

Check out the DVLA site.

Some of them are registered as agricultural vehicles and can be ridden at 16 on L-plates.

Technically these are the only ones that are road legal as the tyres fitted to quad bikes are not approved for road use.

I think there are new quads out now which have 'road' tires.

IMHO I think the use of quads on-roads is a bad idea! Yeah they are great fun off-road, but they do not handle well enough for road use, i.e. cornering, etc.

Just my opinion!! Thumbs Up

You can add most urban bling-tractors (4x4s) to that blanket description too, Thumbs Up as proved on top gear.

Depends on the bike. I used to ride a Honda 650 twin with selectable 2-4WD and a proper differential on the rear axle (selectable diff lock) on the farm I worked on. You could blatter along quite happily at 65mph on tarmac. Cost a fortune in flotation tyres if you did that too regularly though.

A lot of the cheaper quads don't have a proper diff. These are lethal on tarmac.

Good for riding on two wheels though, side ways! Very Happy

Hmmmm, seems no knows for sure what the rules are. All I know for sure is that I wouldn't ride it on the road myself, It looks like a toy. Its tiny. It most certainly wasn't designed to be road legal, looks like someones just thrown a lighting kit on & bluffed it through an MOT. The lad thats using it is a right pikey so I'd be very surprised if it is legal. I'm sure we'll find out soon, after all a pikey riding a tiny quad on the road with no crash helmet aint exactly gonna be inconspicuous to the plod is he.

You will find that the new style road legal quads are classed as a small car and therefore can only be riden/driven with a full car licence on the road. They must be MOT'd if over 3 yrs old, taxed and obviously have a number plate/registered. There is no law regarding wearing a helmet, (cos it is classed as a car) but a bit dangerous if used without, but then its the riders choice.
