Restricting a gsxr 600

Ok i want to but myself a gsxr 600, but the laws here only permit me to ride a 250 for the next couple of years, Now the question is can i buy a gsxr 600 and restrict it to be of equal performance of a 250, then i can get it passed by the rta and ride it??

Then when i can upgrade to a 600 can i derestrict it?

firstly how old are you ?
and i think the law states it has to be restricted to 33bhp (basicly 250cc) u can go to anydealer really, and get them to do it or buy a restriction kit, i say get them to do it, then u wont fuck it up. not too expencive, but if u but a gixxer new, they will most likeley restrict it for you

Ahem Steve, he's in Australia not the UK.

If you're only permitted to ride a 250 then no you can't ride a GSXR600.

Your laws relate to the engine size, not the power, so no you cannot ride a 600cc bike legally if you're allowed to ride a 250cc bike. They might well have a power restriction as well, but the basic fact that you're allowed to ride a 250cc bike means you can't ride a 600cc bike.

I know that you are from Australia. If the law says you are restricted to 250cc, then 250cc it is.

When we talk about restriction, it is because our law has no specific capacity stated in it.

Unfortunately in Australia, 250 = 250 I'm afraid.

The 250 restriction does not apply to the engine size at all, its the power:weight ratio, its just that a 250 4 stroke is the quickest bike in the power:weight ratio im restricted to.

but a lot of austrians ride 2 stroke 250cc which are above the power:weight restriction

It depends on what the power to weight ratio is. It's pointless getting a bigger heavier bike like the GSXR600 and restricting the power out of it then. In the UK to meet the power restrictions we buy kits from FI International, I don't know if there is a similar company out there. Best solution I'd expect is to ask a bike shop as they'll know.

Why do you call it the 250 restriction if it's nothing to do with 250cc?

so alot of people ride 600's when they should be on 250's, its good for them until they get caught and have theyre liscence confiscated!

Ste, they call it a 250 restriction because a 4 stroke 250 is the quickest bike you can get under those restrictions, plus no-one can remember the power:weight ratios so they just go by the max cc's possible.

Well in that case it's up to you, don't know what the likely hood of being caught out there is so I'm not going to comment or say what I'd do. In the UK the police know very very very little about the 33bhp restriction hence a lot of people ignore it.

yeah its the same over here, its just the police on bikes that will get you then tend to know alot more, if you don't break the law then they will never pull you over but the chances of me doing that on a 600 is very low.
