...of her going on the bike.

Any idea how I can convince them that it's safe for their little girl to go on the back of the bike and that she's not going to get killed (hopefully of course). Her parents are not risk takers and don't understand how bikes are fun, or a feasible form of transport. "If its not caged in you're going to die" sort.

Any tips?

That was my plan too (though her parents house is 100miles away) but I'm not even sure if she's going to go back on it yet. Usually what her parents say goes, and they decided to tell her lots of crash stories today. I wasn't there so couldn't argue/tell them to shut it. Hope she ignores them this time.

Tell them that people die in cars as well, every one knows someone whos had a motorbike accident, but then normally know someone whos had a car accident. A friend of mine has fallen off 3 times 2 badly, hes still here today and riding bikes. Tell them its not up to them its her life, if she wants to ride on the back she can, how old is she? im guessing shes not living with them, tell them shes not a baby any more. If all else fails you can always.... i dunno take em on the back and show em your a pro.

Good luck with it.

Take her to get all the gear so that she can see your taking an interest and want her to be safe. Then take her on the back (When she feels ready) on an easy going route so that she can get the hand of it. Next time you go up take her on the back...Its her life, if SHE wants to go on the bike, then they cant tell her what to do...shame really Confused

Look....it's bad enough that their little girl has grown up....now she's seeing someone who wants to take her off on a two-wheeled death rocket. Come on, give them a break and walk her to the pub Wink

Think there may be some pics of our car after the car accident somewhere.

May not be a positive for bikes, but might dissuade their faith in cars.

Can also point out that a significant proportion of bike accidents are single vehicle and happen because of rider error.. you, of course are the perfect rider Smile.

Just reassure them you're not going to top 150mph and you won't try and wheelie it with her on the back. Just don't let them see your fingers behind your back Twisted Evil

... another thought, you could take her parents out on your bike (one at a time obviously) to show how safe you are.

How old is she?

Much as I love my parents, they don't tell me what I can and can't do and they haven't been able to since my mid-teens.

Much as I love my son (he's 19) I don't tell him what to do. His life is his life, and although I hope that he won't fuck it up, it's his decision if he does.

Part of being a parent is learning to let go. Part of growing up is knowing when to let go.

If your g/f wants to go on the back, take her. If her parents don't like it, it's between her and them and the best thing you can do is stay out of it!

(Still think she'd be better getting her own bike though!)

Another vote for 'what the hell have her parents got to do with it'.

Her parents probably aren't mad on the idea of you gaffa taping her to a chair during a kinky sex session either, but would you check with them before doing it?

If she's saying 'oh I won't do it cos my parents don't want me to' she's probably using it as an excuse - she doesn't want to do it anyway and is looking for a reason to convince you with.

I can understand her parents worry, and as a good daughter, I try not to do anything that would upset my parents. (going and buying a bike was slightly out of character for me.... Laughing )

One of the best ideas is to invite her parents out for a meal or somewhere they have not been before, and they can follow you in a car and watch you ride, and see how safely you ride.

However, at the end of the day, her parents aren't preventing her from going on the bike, they are merely advising against it. It is her decision, and if she chooses to have a go, and enjoys it, then I can imagine her parents may even come round in the way mine have. Mine, now will help in any way to make sure that I am safer on the bike, they worry like crazy when I am out on it (and I have to call them whenever I stop to let them know I'm ok) but in spite of all of that they think it's very cool - and LIKE me having a bike. They are proud of me riding! Shocked Thumbs Up

You won't mate. If she wants to go then fine but if you crash you'll have some serious explaining to do as to why her daughters crippled.

I used to take my bird out on the bike even though her Mum said no but since the crash I just won't take a pillion now at all.

Yea, just try not to crash, which means no showing off with her on the back! Just remember it may not be your fault you crash but her parents wont see otherwise. If she did want to go on the bike that much, she would, weather her parents wanted her to or not.

Maybe you should talk to them. Tell them about how you care about her just like they do and that you wouldn't do anything crazy with her on the back. It also won't hurt to show them your driving skills (no not wheelie about) Twisted Evil .

My Ex's parents were just like that. "we know people who have been killed on bikes, so their evil and if you get on one you WILL die." When in fact neither had ever ridden a bike, and a friend of a friend of theirs got killed 20+ years ago.

Their house is right by some lovely twisties, so i thrash it past their house from time to time stinking the lanes up with 2 stroke smoke just to let them know i am the irresponsible twat they assumed i was, and that i'm still very much alive Laughing

Take them (parents) for a ride on the bike. After they realise how easy and relativley safe it is they'll at least be able to have been a pillion so will know what there talking about.
That's what I did with my girlfriends mum, she loved it but my girlfriend pointblank refuses to even go near the bike.

No wheelies mind Laughing .
