lo all

im getting my brand new Honda NSR125 tomorrow, so was just wondering if you could answer a few questions for me (for the experts really)

1) i've read the break-in link (https://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm) and am gonna do this after a proper warm up ofcourse, am i correct on this?

2) just about gearbox oil, what is best to use on a 2 stroke and when to change, i read also in the link above about 20 miles to get rid of all the bits of metal being as new bike, would u recommend that too?

being a new bike i really want to look after it and make it last without any major things to go wrong, so any extra info for me would be greatly appreciated

thanks

stu

That article doesn't apply to 2 stroke motorcycles (Which I'm sure you're aware yours is)

As far as I know that article is for 4 strokes only, I'm sure someone here will prove me wrong though Wink

Enjoy your new bike... git Razz *Wants an NSR*

What colours you got? Tri or Black/Grey?

just use a fully-syneftic 2 stroke oil like Castrol TTS or R2

gearbox oil change is about every 3,000 miles on a NSR125 and for that most people use 10w40 4 stroke oil, or specaily desgined gearbox oil like motol trans oil or castrol MTX

There is lots of conflicting stuff regarding running the bike in what oil to use. I am currently using castrol super TT which is good enough for the NSR, at around £6 a litre it also doesn't destroy my bank balance either. I will however (when I can be bothered) switch to some shell semi synthetic stuff when I have the cash, 12 litres for £42 delivered Thumbs Up works out at £3.75 a litre I think.

https://www.am-oils.co.uk/products.htm (thanks to CPL_redbaron for finding that Thumbs Up)

You don't need fully synthetic oil in the NSR, the extra you pay for every litre will pay for a new top end when it goes Wink

As for running it in I am not too sure, the most important thing is that it is properley warmed up. Also I was recommended to use mineral based oil during the running in period rather than semi/fully synthetic oil, not sure if this is correct but I will give it a shot Smile

i know, i looked high and low for one, mine is literally end of line from "tonymoto"

i didn't fancy the new 4-stroke 125, not only are they not as pokey as a 2-stroke but the new 4-stroke's look shite, not sure what honda is doing to be honest? Confused

They stopped making them in 2001. Models continuted to be shipped and registered afterwards. "New" NSR's are still cropping up.

The important thing about running in a two stroke is performing heat cycles as when pistons heat up they expand. This expansion is greatest for the first few times, but decreases as the heat cycles progress - however, that page says this all happens before the engine is put together....

The link refers to four stroke engines, yours will be a two stroke and i guess you could do more harm than good with the rings traversing the ports.

Another point is that he is refering to large capacity street bikes. Yours will be a very small capacity engine, so yours shouldnt get an easy life unlike the large capacity bikes which will rarely be able to be given full load in high gears.

I've had my 125 on the dyno after a conservative run-in and it was a bit soggy and lacking in power. The dyno operator advised me to red line it in ever gear on the way home and really give it a good thrashing. By the time i got home it had higher compression (would start easier) and was much crisper.

As for gear oil, use what ever they put in and get it changed when they say. Its ONLY a gearbox. Unless you really muff up a gear change you won't have much metal floating around. Again, he is talking about a four stroke engine that has oil pumps, oil passages, oil filters and everything else that goes in there and it all conected to the combustion chamber.

When I've re-built 2 strokes I just let them warm up then give them a good trashing, taking it to redline a few times etc, but don't hold it there for too long until I've covered about 100miles, so I basically just avoid A-roads and crap until I've 100 miles of varying acceleration, checked my rings yesterday and there is no blow-by what so over and it runs fine.
