How much would you be worried about finding...

...a small ammount of fine aluminium in your oil filter, all at one end on about 10degrees of the 360degrees on the filter (took the filter apart to check the paper)...

This is an old bike dont know if that should make any difference, its had three/four oil changes on the same filter (yes bad i know).

It is hardly piled high only a little where its in the corners... this is the worst of it here, the rest is clear, this must be the bottom where it collected...

Good news no bronze bits, which as i'm told is bearings, which (if your seen the previous thread) was the main worry at the moment... will probably find out more after haveing the engine appart

Also ever noticed how trying a different helmet lets you heal allot of different noises? scarey stuff

Mildy worried yes, but normally shell bearings are alloy coloured.

How many miles had the filter done?

One good reason not to cut filter open. You only worry yourself.

Id say its done ALLOT, 3000 miles per oil change (thought its usually allot less before a change) its done at least 3lots something like 9k far more than it should really...

The thing is the fan is on the camshaft at the end, its been off twice (fixed on properly now though) the camshaft also drives the water pump impeller, so i'd imageine its been eating at various bearings on the way which is why i now have an extra ticking noise... it might be camchin not had chance (or courrage) to check yet... odie had a listen and seemed pritty sure what it was.

I tend to agree with Kickstart in that cutting the filter open is going to worry you.

Think about , why is the filter there in the first place, as components wear filing are to be expected. the filter has simply done it's job.

that amount of filings found every oil change at a couple of thousand miles would be worrying but as you have said this filter has not been changed in a while.

Hi

It is not unknown on some engines for a loose cam chain to be able to rub on various metal components. That is a quite possible source of the metal, depending on how the CX is designed.

You can pick up filters quite cheaply. Even the metal spin on ones tend to cost £20 for 5 at the bike shows (I tend to keep quite a few ready for use), with the paper ones quite a bit cheaper.

Worry less.

Expect some wear. It may have some internal damage, but this is a cheap old bike with some miles on, not a brand new one. Just ride it until it dies.
