Hi all. As the heading states. I would like to know if any points that are currently on ones provisional licence go on to a full licence once ya get one? I was given a courtesy Benille 100cc scooter from a shop while my RS 125 was being fixed a good few months ago and i got stopped on it. Turned out i wasn't insured for it under my own insurence and the shop only covered the bike. Anyway. It all went to court last tuesday and i got 6 points under strick liability and no fine because of the circunstances. My insurance is up at the start of December and my insurance will go through the roof with 6 points i'm sure. I have been told though that if i get my test done before that time, those points wont carry onto my full licence. Is this true? Thanks

There's nothing i can really do about it. Apparently i got off as lightly as could be expected. For having no insurance, no matter what the reason, it's a mandatory 6 points. Even though i had a policy to cover my RS, it didn't cover the courtesy scooter. The shop also got taken to court. It's Jeremy McWilliams shop. He was also going to get 6 points and a fine but his case got thrown out because that case was against a business and not an individual for some reason. My lawyer told me that the points wont be on my full licence when i get it. Thats why i was asking.

When you got those six points on your provisional did you get a ban of some sort? Since you can only get six points on that licence.

The six points only get you a ban if you amass them in the first two years after you get you (first?) full licence. If you have six points before you get it, I think that it's a case of any more and you're banned.

Banning here might just mean revocation of licence so you have to do the whole lot again I think.

No. No ban. I got an absolute discharge. But the 6 points are mandatory. I just bit the bullet and called my insurance company and told them about the 6 points and then got a quote. My insirance is up at the end of this month. Last year it cost me £385 to insure an RS125. They quoted me, points included, £350.lol. How do ya work that out?lol. I get 6 points and my insurance goes down Razz

Hi

He lives in NI and the laws there are a little different.

6 points is not a ban on a provisional licence. It is a ban within the first 2 years of gaining your first full licence, but that does not mean that if you pass your test you get an immediate ban, but you will if you get any more points at all in that time.

Points last on your licence for 3 years, but can only be taken off your licence after 4 years. However insurance companies take notice of them for longer than that (10 years for some offences), and driving without insurance is likely to be taken account of for longer.

Driving without insurance will really screw up your insurance. If the dealer told you that you were insured then I would seriously think about seeking some legal advice, as they have probably cost you a good few thousand pounds over the next couple of years in increased insurance costs.

All the best

Keith

That's the PSNI for you. Seriously is unfair though.

Does this mean on my full license if I get 6 points I am allowed to keep my license, it's just if I get over 6 I lose it? I always thought its once you get to 6 you lose it.
