Having just passed my driving test yesterday, and I have my bike test in less than 2 weeks time, I thought I'd save some money by applying for full licenses in a one'r, instead of sending off my driving and bike pass certificates seperately.

Turns out, from what I've been told, if I do it seperately or not, it's going to cost me £30 to register that I've got both certificates for bike and car.

Is that correct???

God damnit, they're taking the piss....administration charges my arse.

Hey sorry I cant help you out on that particular topic but…
One thing that has fucked me off with the DVLA is the fact I cant speak to anyone.
If you want to know anything you have to listen to that annoying recorded bloke or send a letter explaining what you want.
Anyone know how you can chat to someone?

Hi

To add further to their rip offs they are now proposing that they will charge you for declaring SORN. Current proposal is around £5, but that will no doubt go through the roof.

I really cannot see how they can justify charging us for the utterly pointless SORN declarations. Especially when they want to charge 4 months worth of VED for a 125 if you just want it off the road for a month while you sort out the MOT.

All the best

Keith

When you apply for your "first full licence" it has a charge, allthough its a low one, replacement/duplicate licences are much more expensive). Motorcycle test pass is "add a catagory" which is free.

I sent my licence off to upgrade it from a full car with provisional motorcycle to full car and full motorcycle when I passed my bike test. Encolsed a cheque for £18 as requested on the form. 2 weeks later I recieve a cheque back from DVLA for £18, hasn't cost me a penny to upgrade. I have no problems with them.

I have written letters to the buggers FIVE times informing them they have spelled my name incorrectly on my licence.

Once when I first got my licence and saw the mistake. Sent back to me with a printed note saying "there are no errors on your licence".

Again when I had motorcycles put on my provisional. New licence issued with same mistake.

Again when I passed my bike test including correctly spelled pass certificates. New licence issused with same mistake.

Again when I passed my car test (photocard licence). This time as well as spelling it correctly on the form (which I am pretty certain I did on all the others), the pass certificate and the letter explaining they had spelled my name wrong (which I sent with all the others) they also had my passport with it spelled correctly.

Last time with EXTREMELY snotty letter explaining the above and demanding they replace it free of charge with a correctly spelled one since they charged me 24 quid for it. Returned with same printed note as the first time saying there are no errors.

I have now given up on it.

Wankers the lot of them.

My brother applied for his provisional licence in June. He declared the medical thing as he's on medication which could potentially make him drowsy. He finally got his licence two weeks ago.
June, July, August, September, October... three and a half months?!

By the way, you cannot send off the letter from the Doctor to say you're safe to ride with the application, you cannot send in the medical form to let them assess whether you are safe, they will not pay any attention to this when you do send it in, and they will take at least a fortnight to hand anything to another department.

"Doctor, have you heard from the DVLA?" "Yes, I sent them a letter saying that you're fit to drive three weeks ago." .... 6 weeks pass, and finally a licence appears. Shocked

Oh, and that's neglecting the three attempts it took me to get them to register my imported bike... Rolling Eyes They explain absolutely nothing (no literature with the application form), just send the form back with some cryptic scrawl on a cover note.

I am pretty sure your local DVLA office can do that kind of job. Best way is to go down and speak to a real person face-to-face and fill out any forms in front of them.

The DVLA's slackness with their medical department isn't all bad, I sent them the forms for them to then take my license away back in July and still havn't had it taken. Had a letter last week telling me that if I chase the NHS up it might go a bit quicker. I then called them to ask what happens with my 33bhp and it goes on pause and currently it is still running. So I've now had 7 months of 33bhp restriction time used up when I havn't even sat on a bike, just need them to drag it out until after Febuary 10th next year. Mr. Green Mr. Green

It's nice to see it works both ways sometimes. Never did I think that we the humble citizen could actually benefit from beauraucracy, spin and waste, but I was wrong. Mr. Green

You'll be cursing them when the Doctor says you're okay to ride again though, they'll take another six months knowing them... Rolling Eyes

As said before, you'll only pay the once for your full license. Adding the bike license (assuming you pass Wink ) is free since you are 'adding a category' Thumbs Up

Hope this helps,

Mark

Straight cut&paste from the MAG website. Consultation document needs responses by 8th November. Spend 20 mins writing to them to do something about it.

Issued 3rd November 2004

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) is fighting the proposed introduction of charges for the Annual Registration and Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) for motorcycles revealed in a consultation document from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

The DVLA are seeking to raise approximately £82M to fund the change to a standardised European license in a move that would see the end of paper licenses in favour of chip-based credit card style licenses as part of an effort to reduce road tax evasion.

MAG succeeded in persuading Government against introducing continuous taxation of vehicles even when in storage in a previous consultation that resulted in the existing SORN compromise which is currently free. MAG sees the possibility of an annual registration charge for stored vehicles as a form of continuous taxation by another name and fears the fee could rise with the passage of time.

MAG recognises the advantage of an up to date vehicle record but wishes to see the registration of vehicles in storage remain free.

Riders of Historic or Classic motorcycles many of whom own more than one vehicle and who are currently exempt from payment of road fund tax will have to pay according to the consultation a maximum of £4.50 for each vehicle. The consultation is not clear if fees for Annual Registration and SORN are separate.

Trevor Baird MAG Director of Public Affairs asks, "What happens if vehicle keepers pay the annual registration fee and then decide to declare SORN for those vehicles? Do they have to pay another fee to declare SORN for vehicles on top of the Annual Registration fee they have already paid? If they then decide to put those vehicles back on the road, will there be another fee? When would the annual registration fee then be due? We have asked the DVLA to clarify this issue."

MAG welcomes the proposed abolition of the fee for a first driving licence under the age of 21 as a means of encouraging the use of sustainable two wheeled transport.

Notes:

1. MAG Action Document is available here

2. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs has organised a petition opposing the principle of an Annual Registration Charge details at www.fbhvc.co.uk

Just keep the documents to prove you tried to give them the correct details, incase they are cheeky enough to try and do you for having incorrect details!

I sent off my car and motorcycle pass certificates off at the same time and only paid the one fee, £12 I think it was.
