Assuming everything goes well tomorrow, I plan to phone up and arraange bike insurance for my er-5. Once I've paid, and confirmed everything, do I have to wait for some sort of cover sheet to come in the post before I can ride it, or can I just hit the road immediately?

Thing is, I want to use it for commuting the next day.

I'm assuming that I can send off the pass certificate(bike and car), get the license updated and then send it off to the insurance company, meanwhile being covered insurance wise? Is this correct?

Thanks in advance Smile

Yeah you are covered from the minute you arrange cover, as long as you state that you want cover from that moment. The only thing that normally holds ppl back is if you need tax as you need an original certificate or cover note to get tax unless you go to a DVLA office (not a post office) and get them to phone your insurance company and then they'll fax a cover note through but they have to get it faxed them selves.
If your taxed then your laughing!
Good luck any how.

The policy will cover you for whenever you arrange the cover to start from, they can cover you instantly if you want them to. If you need a cover note to buy tax with or whatever you can ask them to fax you a cover note, have used a faxed insurance cover note with no problems before. If you can't get a faxed cover note and you need proof of insurance to buy road tax it's very easy to knock a document up in Word which looks perfectly authentic and will easily fool the old lady behind the post office counter. Obviously not worth trying to fool a police man with, but the post office won't check, they just want to see a bit of paper which says that you have insurance. I have done that before when I needed to buy tax and they sent my insurance documents through with the registration plate wrong and I needed to buy tax.

I doubt your insurance company will be interested in seeing proof of your test pass, as would they actually care if you've passed or not? If you try to claim then they'll be interested in seeing your paperwork to see if they can get out of paying the claim, but until that day all that is happening is you're paying them lots of money, they don't care one bit if your insurance is valid or not as it's not their problem if it's invalid.

Hope test all goes well tomorrow. Mr. Green

Totall disagree with many of those comments....sorry
I tried a fax once and even the old lady at the post office was'nt that stupid so I had to get it faxed through to the DVLA office in town to get tax, just means you go to the DVLA rather than the post office. The insurance cover notes and certificates now have water makrs on them so it's not as easy as that to fool ppl and the post office ppl seem more and more clued up.
Insurance companies are very interested in facts! if you tell them a lie they can get even more money by taking your money then not insuring you for the year as you have told them a lie so not really worth it! and most insurance companies actually ask for a copy of your driving licence which also shows the paper work with points on!
not trying to scare ppl but this is my experience with cars for the past 5 years and my bike insurers are now bugging me for a copy of my drivers licence to prove I can actually ride the bike!

Insurance: You are coverd from when ever you arrainge to be, this can be imediate allthough its normally the next day

Tax on the other hand must be obtained with proof of insurance, MOT, licence, ownership. Insurance documents typically come through the post within 3-5 days.

Got to wait 3-5 days? Have you bollocks! Very Happy

When taking out insurance they ask to see no documents and ask only that you state only the truth. You can arrainge the insurance before you even take your test, the only technicality is that you won't be coverd untill all the statements you gave (such as full licence) are true.
So in theory you can:

Take out insurance
Get tax
Pass test
Ride

allthough i don't knbow anybody who has tried this, if you need to use the bike ASAP then its worth looking into! Smile
