I’ve just got a bike as some of you know; I planned on getting a textile jacket and some gloves along with a helmet. I have recently brought the helmet for 60 quid (agv gp1) and I shall be buying the other stuff later in the year.

I was thinking if this was enough to protect me? I will be riding to school on it everyday which means that I will be riding in my school trousers and school shoes (which are those slip ons). If I were to fall off or have an accident on the way there would be nothing to protect my feet or legs, do you think I should invest in some decent boots and trousers as well??

If so can you recommend anything of a reasonable price?

Or am I just being over cautious?

Well, I got a pair of boots for £60 and I think the investment was worth it. I'll also probably get a decent pair of motorcycle trousers (waterproof for winter). Even with jeans on my balls felt as though they were going to fall off from the cold at 60 mph Laughing

Obviously you don't think every time you go out on the bike "oh, I'm going to fall off today" but if worse came to worse then at least you'd still have some skin left on your ankles / legs.

Losing a slip on at speed wont do you any good at all, or losing it when putting your foot down might end up in a slip and dropping the bike! You really should have some ankle support. I picked up a set of second hand sidi's for just over £70. As for your legs etc, they wont provide much protection but a hein gericke one piece suit will stop ALL the wind coming in and therefore keep you warm. You will need a little more protection though, suggest putting jeans on top of your school trousers then bagging them when you get there, a gericke one piece will set you back £34.99 by the way!

either way try and be safe Wink

Thumbs Up

Get trousers.

I should really get a picture of the scar on my brothers leg to post as an answer to this question. He was wearing just work trousers, got pulled out on by a transit, his thigh was sliced open in the accident from 3-4 inches from the knee all the way up almost to the groin. I'd have thought that he been wearing a pair of decent textile trousers, the tear wouldn't have been so long as the trousers would have resisted it.

I won't ever ride in anything less than jeans, and not often less than my HG Devon trousers. Boots and proper trousers have definately saved me from broken bits.

You can't really be over cautious, you really don't need to be going fast at all to break things... Rolling Eyes

To give you an idea, even though I am "training" on my 125, I still wear my Sidis, leather trousers and textile jacket.

Of course, it goes to say that I have a helmet and gloves on all the time too!

It may look a bit overkill, but as people have said, you don't need to be going fast to fall off and hurt yourself!

Doobs.

I take it you have not done your CBT yet as they go over all this.

Boots give good ankle protection, imagine what damage could happen if your trainer was ripped off? A decent set of boots should also keep your feet nice and dry.

Textile jacket and trousers with armour in are also a good idea to protect your shoulders and knees. A decent set should keep you warm and dry which keeps you much happier on the bike.

Hi

I just had an accident a while ago and I really think you should think of buying more protective gear. I was wearing jeans and a T- shirt but my knee got pretty injured, so did my hip. I wasn't exactly going that fast either. After the accident I decided to buy as much protective gear as I could. Gloves don't cost that much so I think you should go for them, maybe some boots two. Or you could forget about these and buy your self some textile.

Even when I was riding my RS125 I wore a pair of sidis, an AGV, an aprilia jacket with CE armour all over it (if its not CE it technically cant be classed as armour), decent gloves, a pair of sidi vertebrae and a pair of hein gericke leather trousers (also with CE and Hiprotec) Up until last week I wore the same gear on my CBR600. People said it was overkill wearing such gear on a 125 but I used to say ' I'll tell that to the road when I hit at 60 and it might let me off!'. I say up until last week because I now wear a one piece race suit with full CE and a Knox back protector. Im a safety guy. never the less to go back to the real subject, the bare minimum you should have are thick jeans, a good jacket, gloves, helmet and some kind of ankle support, but if you have the cash go for the full kit. When i say ankle support dont be fooled into thinking a good pair of doc martens will do (especially the steel toe caps) as there are far too many horror stories of what a toe cap can do when it hits the road!
