I finally gave in after all the hassle of trying to find an NSR and all the costs and hassle of rebuilds that the guys in IRC have finally talked me into doing a full test and buying a 500.

Currently I am looking at the ER-5 but the others also mentioned the CB500 and the GS500, but currently I seem to like the ER-5 the most. I would have prefered a faired bike, but it does seem to look nice even without it.

So, what should I know about an ER-5 before riding one, is there anything special that it needs doing and what sort of maintenance does it need? (just after I learnt all the crap an NSR needs doing Rolling Eyes ).

Meh, also looking more at the GPZ500S too now, any thoughts?

Oppinions from owners are also good.

Thanks,
Ex

Oh, and on that note, licence. I am doing my CBT tommorow and hope to pass that (will be shooting myself if I don't). But anyway, some people have recommended doing a course instead. What does this involve and what will I have to do all together?

A full course usually consists of the CBT, but the following days, you do more intensive training with the instructors. But in order to do your practical test - you'd need to have passed your theory first.

Get a nice er-5, and dont put off buying on ebay either. Theres quite a few on it right now, searching under "er5" or "er-5". I bought mine and saved a feckin fortune. Highly recommended from me, although I have yet to take it out properly, it does seem fast as feck!!!

My Kawasaki er-5, if it doesn't show up first off, press refresh

Got mine, 3 years old, 10k on the clock, fender extender, rack, undertray and fairing all for £1150. For a bike that costs £3000 new, thats one hell of a depreciation !!! Jump on the bandwagon.

I'd personally, have the gpz500 engine in an er5 frame, er5's motor IS weaker, but the GPZ looks extremely dated if you ask me Smile

hmm, this is an annoyance. The GPZ and ER-5 are both cat 8 whilst the GS is cat 7. Danny thinks ~£360 for the NSR (cat 7) but ~£600 for the GPZ (cat 8).

Thats a huge difference, now I know Craig was saying to get the GPZ over the other two, but that is a rather large factor in it Crying or Very sad Highly annoying factor to say the least...

I had a GS and I loved it, it had a fairing and it was probably the sexiest bike I have ever seen, currently having its engine put back together (through not fault of the bikes it died a bit) and being part exchanged for my GSXR600 but never the less I would recommend the GS, aftermarket fairings make it sexy as hell, but expensive if you get them after the bike.
Still a stock GS500 is nice enough.
Kind of wish I still had mine as a commuter bike and to show up all the inferior 500s that look ugly. Smile

Had a GPZ500S as my first large capacity bike after passing my test. Had no real problems with it at all (until it was eaten by a Fiesta at a roundabout... D'oh).

Might be worth looking out for dodgey down pipes (they rot) and the rear drum brake (if they still come with these) can be a bit naff (though mine never gave any problems).

Did a bit of commuting as well as a couple of longer trips, was great for both.

Generally reliable, except the alternators loose their magents on the earlier ones (the ones with drum brakes). Front brake is not that powerful, but is the same as the GS500. Very good on petrol.

All the best

I used to be a big fan of the GS500F faired version, but I sat on it today at the Bike show and I nearly puked at the size of the fairing! It looks ghastly, when looking down on it! Confused

Not really, I didn't want a stepping stone, not the mention the insurance on a NSR250 will be higher.

Oh errr, I don't really want to say, people don't like the bike all that much on here. Confused
