Hi aLL

I have a M Reg xj6000 Diversion which has done 19500miles.

I did a mini service (sparks, oil, filter) on it, and now i have a oil light that keeps coming on ONLY for about 1 minute from cold. Rarely goes it come on in mornings when its been kept in my garage over night.

The oil used was 10-40 - fairly decent stuff.
The oil level is just below the max point in viewer window.

I think this is more likly to be cold related rather than oil change related, as the weather turned at same time, however there has been some warmer days, and light still come on......

I here this is a docuemted thing - is this true. If so can anyone shed any light on it (I have searched everywhere)

If anyone can let me know any info they might know, id be very grateful.

Thanks

Matt

Hi

Most Yamahas use an oil level light rather than an oil pressure light. The sensor is pretty much just a small float operating a switch. Plenty of people seem to have problems with them. I would suspect the float is sticking as you say the oil level is correct.

Not sure how much a new oil level switch is, but the chances are you need to replace it. I will check in the Diversion manual to ensure that it really is a level switch on the Divvy.

All the best

Keith

my dad had a divvy for a year, the oil light allways came on in that for about 20-30 seconds. i allways assumed it was normal, his bike allways ran fine. i sugest looking for a diversion owners forum and asking around there if its a common thing or not.

thanks, that has help put my mind atrest a little at least.

Im still gonna take it real easy on bike while light is on though,

If anyone is able to find oout what part is required, and whether its worth replacing , that would be much appreciated

(The bike is a run around one to work - to save stacking miles on my GSXR - basically if it can get through the winter ill be very happy!! Saying that the engine sounds and responds real good, so it might be one of those which last forever, with some tender care etc.)

Hi

Checked the manual (got the original Yamaha one for the 1992 model) and it is a level switch. It is on the bottom of the engine, towards the back by the looks of it.

If it was a pressure light then riding the bike would be a really bad idea. If the oil pressure was low it would screw the engine up even taking it gently.

Might be worth draining the oil again, taking the switch out and cleaning it up.

All the best

Keith

as a further thing on the oil

the light comes on only when the bike is moving, never when warning up.

the light comes on more when under higher revs

the light comes (and has stayed) on in cold wet conditions

could this mean this is not a faulty switch???

thanks

if it`s a level light and the level`s okay it`s a dodgy switch. what oil was it semi-full synthetic and what does the manual recommend because some engine`s don`t like different oil`s.

Hi

Does sound like a dodgy switch. The situations you describe are the ones where the level will have dropped slightly though. Could be that the switch is not seated correctly.

10-40 semi syn oil

of course the old oil was drained, and new filter.
duno what was in there prev (as brought it with last lot in) and lost my haynes manual, so no idea what is meant to go in - however was told at shop thats what it would be. (guy knew his oils etc, so no reason to doubt)

well its still going anyway, !!!

Hi

Just keep a close eye on the oil level through the sight glass. Might be worth giving it an early oil change just to flush things out, but that is probably me being a bit paranoid.

The switch for the oil light should be easy to change, but I think you need to drain the oil to do so.

All the best
