Hi guys and girls,
Does anybody know what material the firestorm frame is made from? As I have to weld one of the lugs on my engine as it's cracked

If you don't know what i mean by the lug or I'm using the wrong name for it whatever. It's the piece of the engine that the spindle runs through to attach the engine and frame together.

Answers will be much appreciated.

Give us an email on dean__stone@hotmail.com as my access to this site is a little restricted.

Cheers.

Hmm, not sure but it's probably cast aluminium or alloy. I would consider getting a specialist to do this, it's not really something to do at home...

You won't find anything made from pure aluminium, it'd be too soft. Alloy is usually the same thing as aluminium alloy. This is usually cast or extruded.

Welding aluminium isn't as simple as welding steel, as all the aluminium oxide needs to be scraped off before hand, and any impurities cleaned off. It can't just be done with an oxyacetylene torch either I should think.

It will be an alloy of aluminium and something else, and which particular alloy is very important when welding.

To be honest very few people can do a good job of welding alloy.

All the best

luckily enough I dont think it a big job. Im just concerned about strength issues there 6 holding points on the frame to engine. I just want is patched up to put my mind at rest for if I was to take it on a trackday etc..

Hi

The problem is that even if you get a strong weld it is still likely to look really bad. Like a mini lunar landscape.

All the best
