hi is it any good?

im looking at a 91 model does it have a powervalve engine? is it fast(er) than a modern DT

bhp? topspeed? handling on the road/ offroad?

Hi

Mid 20s hp, decent mid range. Quite similar to the 125 but a fair bit more useable. From memory I think the 200 came with alloy wheel rims rather than the steel ones used on the 125 (but that might vary by year).

They all had powervalves (KIPS system), although it is quite easy to set it up wrongly and loose power all over the place.

Biggest problem will be finding a decent one that hasn't been nicked.

Ive had 2 KMX's. yes they are faster than a DT125 even a very good one with 20bhp r/w. The std KMX200 is 30bhp, and my old one did an easy 85mph, but MCN have had 93mph out of one, and a 1/4mile in 15.6 @87mph. They are quite nippy round town, and on std gearing will cruise all day at 75mph indicated. Speedo is about 6-7mph fast over 50mph though. my current one has KMX125 gearing, and so it would have probably done around 75mph, when it was running. Its very good for wheelies with that gearing tough. personally i reckon its the next best street 2stroke/supermoto basis, after the TDR250, so if you do find one thats in reasonable condition, without a dodgy history, then firstly good luck, and secondly id get it, as for a second bike they are alot of fun. Ive seen the new DT125X at the NEC, and im going to be converting my 200 into a similar looking bike, with decent sticky 17" tyres, and big front brake, and much firmer suspension. I should easily find another 7-10bhp with some tuning work, so, i reckon, it could end up being a nice silly street moto, with the right igredients! As long as its better and faster than the Gas Gas 125 SM then im going to be happy!

I bought it! for 600 quid, recent respray including the frame done properly, very clean bike! Good service history and stuff too! a good price i reckon Very Happy

My old 200, did about 40mpg, sometimes a bit more when on a long run. It can drop to about 36-38mpg around town or off road. Tank range is 70mile to reserve, with 9litres, so it needs filling up every ride, sometimes even twice. The Motor is torquey and usable, but it doent have a sharp powerband, or that much top end power as std. All the fun is between 4-8k, but its actually de-tuned in terms of port timimg compared to the KMX125, and it uses a tiny 26mm carb like the 125. A 30mm TM or even the PWK33 would be a great improvement all through the range i reckon.
The DT200R is a better bike still but its never been sold in the u.k. which is a terrible shame, as its got the same power but in a taller and better suspended chassis!

thanks mate some very useful stuff there,

- i dont have a rev counter so i cant see if the kips are working correctly :S. If they are old type and snapped then are they easily fixable? i was thinking maybe send the whole head with PVs attached to Stan stevens for some port work, then they could look at the PVs then,

-als i have a rs125 carb, u think that would go on? maybe i will have a look tomorrow. It alread yhas a KnN filter (hidden behind the airbox in the piccy) but not sure if its been jetted to suit..

I found a small performance improvement on my first KMX by fitting Boyesen dualstage reeds, and dropping to a 110main jet, as well as raising the needle 1 position. I also fitted a DEP can which made a further small gain in midrange power. The First thing to check on the KMX though if you suspect poor performance is the KIPS valves. The bike should pull well up to about 7k, but still pull ok from 8-9.5k. If it doesnt want to rev past 7k then one of the powervalves could be seized or more likely broken. The early KMX's had alloy valves. If the bike is never ridden hard, the the valves dont open and become stuck. Seeing as the spindles are soft alloy the KIPS operating rack trys to push them open, but the shaft can snap instead. Broken valves cannot damage the engine like an RGV, but will severely restrict power from 6-7k upwards. Replacment later valves are steel, which is how they should have been from the start. As for tuning restoring the exhaust,boost and transfer port specs to the KMX125 durations should be a good start. The 200 has 172deg exhaust, 186deg boost ports, and 118deg transfers. The KMX125 uses 176deg exhaust, boost 190deg, and transfer 120deg. The 200 really needs a bigger carb for more power everywhere. A modern flatslide would really improve performance. The TM28 from the DT125 goes straight on, but isnt any improvment really on the 200. The TM30 Powerjet carb if you can get one fits the stock rubber manifold, and airbox hose. If you want the best performance a Kehin PWK33 or 35 will fit straight on the KMX using the KDX220 manifold. Of course the Airbox will also be a fairly restrictive on a 200, so either take off the lid, and use a Twinair filter, or else remove the airbox and fit a K&N type cone. The V-Force reed cage would also be a great improvment. people have told me the KMX200 front pipe isnt bad, but the silencer being the same as the 125's really strangles it. Use a DEP or KX silencer for more performance. You should be able to reach 35ish bhp without doing much to the motor, but with porting and a custom expansion chamber like im planning to do with my bike it should be closer to 40bhp, with a nice powerband.
