I seem to recall he has posted that picture himself before now. I think in that case it is safe to say it is indeed him.

Yup, that's Stinkwheel replacing the head gasket in his '305. Presumably with a cereal box. Bought in the Local Shop For Local People.

his girlfriend is a lucky lass. I can't imagine many men giving up an afternoon of their bike rally to guddle around in the innards of a motorbike that isn't theirs, especially with only a bus shelter and a yellow plastic bucket as a workshop.

Many years age when I still did rallies I helped my mate replace a borked auto gearbox on his Vx Carlton engined trike in the middle of a rally field

It shouldn't have taken as long as it did but people kept offering tinnies and aromatic ciggies in sympathy

Well, I'd say it's probably due to the huge network of virtually empty, high quality roads with clear views, pristine road surfaces and sweeping, interlinked, constant radius, perfectly cambered corners interspersed with long enough straights to max out any motorcycle.

This is the B-road leading to the rally site:
https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/vidlinroad.png

Google street view Try it on pretty much any road. Bricks will be shat.

This is what you get when you don't let the government squander your oil money in the general treasury pot but instead invest it in long term infrastructure. Every town has a top-notch village hall and primary school too.

And yes, that's me changing the head gasket on the girlfriends bike. Only took an hour or so. The hardest bit was getting the new gasket delivered to my tent on the rally field.

Wotcha.

Ah, the Simmer Dim rally.

Did one in 1986, then went again in 1987.

One thing I like about that rally is the shop next to the rally field. It keeps going purely on the basis of the rally being there. It gets bigger every year (it was apparently a tin shed when they first started.).

They reckon they sell more petrol over the rally weekend than they do for the rest of the year combined. (and you go through it quick!).

Rally pictures.

Wotcha.

If my memory serves me correctly, the shop was owned by a guy named Willie ( now for the tricky bit ) Herculson, or something similar. He would be open at all strange hours of the day.

Following the customary food fight in the Vidlin village hall on the Saturday dinner time, Willie would get his sheepdogs to come and "clean up" all the food that was within a sheepdog's reach.

She certainly is. Cool Thumbs Up

Did you not hear the wailing and keening of spinsterly types up and down the country, when he recently announced his engagement?

It was the bit where he power-wheelied it off the end when he tried to do a second burnout, landed front wheel first, faceplanted over the bars, broke his neck and had to be airlifted to Aberdeen that sticks in the mind though.

So damn close to being supreme win.
Was he OK in the end?

Aye. It occurrs that that picture is asking for a "haters gonna hate" caption on it.

This is the same guy a couple of years later just coming off the "lighthouse" (an electric powered roundabout with a litre pot of cider mounted in the middle and a hosepipe coming off the bottom).
