Just a little word of warning to you all, particularly the new bikers or those which are having their first winter on two wheels.

Its crash season now. Take it easy. Its cold enough for black ice, and you get some very slimy wet patches at this time of year that are as bad as ice. Check your tyre pressures and tread, and take your time.

And before any of you get pissed off at this one, it isn't a patronising message, its a genuine bit of advice based on been there, done that.

Just as well my commute to Uni is only 2 miles long and all below 30 work, very linear. Chances of going rubber side up are minimal but I shall remain overly cautious all the same. Smile

Also mean your tyres, the bike and your reactions will be cold.
I've crashed coming a mile back from the shops and going to work several times before, so best to not be too complacent as you say Smile.

Hi

Walking pace is 3~4mph, so that is going to be closer to a 40 minute walk, rather than a 5 minute ride.

Why waste an hour a day?

All the best

Keith

It is indeed a 35 minute wak and I walk quite quickly.

I got the bike as motivation to actually GO to uni. Plus, I've done, what, 120 miles since wednesday so it gets used for everyfink.

My bike isn't at uni. Had it here for the easter term and it made uni more fun, but there are too many scalies in my area this year. Due to the conjestion in bangor and the backwards/welsh road system it would take me ages anyway..

Good advice, Robby. Unfortunately, I'm on my first winter and also riding back and forth from work on just a rear brake at the moment. If I'm still in one piece when my rotors come in on the 26th, chalk up another win in the safety column for the Yanks. Razz

Good advice and very apt for the amount of "offs" we have had recently. Ahhhh Black Ice, it's nasty.

Great advice to the new people!

Tyre pressures are what you should check every couple of days
if you use your bike daily. Weather changes do affect tyre pressures.
In about 5 days my rear tyre of my CD250U dropped from 30psi
down to 15psi. At first thought it was a puncture but after the
pump and spray test I used the bike all day without a problem.
The pressure was lost due to cold and warm weather.

One great tip, when you get home at night, turn the lights off
and keep the engine running. Lights do drain the battery and
the last thing you want is a bike that has trouble starting and
you run out of power.

Well then presumably, that would have to be done all year round, as they recommend leaving your lights on all the time. Confused

Get a pushbike Laughing 2 miles in less than 10 min, probably faster than getting ready to get on the bike, starting up, gettng there, parked etc etc. You can even practice getting yer knee down! Rolling Eyes Laughing

I was taught to use my lights all the time, as i was taught to assume every other road user is blind and cannot see you. I dont use lights during daytime in summer but around this time of year i dont ever not use the lights. Dipped beam during the day and high beam after 4:00pm Razz

You do still dip though I assume?

Even if your lights seem crap and dull, another road user can't see past you.
