Crying or Very sad "un economical repair" that's how it was phrased to me. Was told at first that what I needed was a starter clutch, which I FINALLY managed to get hold of & took down to get fitted.
Unfortunately, when they went to fit the part, the damage was unveiled.Crying or Very sad

At some point there has been a bad bodge carried out which has given out.

All I know is extensive crank case damage = rebuild = fooking expensive.

It still bump starts ok, but won't start off the button, so i'm not a happy bunny at the mo.

Is this a new bike that you've only recently bought? Were you told that all that was wrong with it was it needed a new starter?

Important question, did you buy it privately or trade?

I'd be after getting a new engine, CBR6 engines can be picked up for around £400, local dealer quoted me £1500+ Laughing , for a new crankcase and rebuild, when my chain came off, i picked up a Hornet engine (same as cbr6 except different cams for £180), its identical except for the cylinder head. Well i gave the engine to one of my dads mates with my bike to fit, but he managed to welded a lug onto the old crankcase so i dont have a need for the engine.

Try ebay, and if there are any CBR6 forums try there, or at a last attempt put a post on www.hondahornet.co.uk, and pick up an engine from there.

Good Luck

Ooooooooooooooh how i know your pain. My pig of a bike wont start, i waited 3 months to source and buy a coil. Got it today. Fitted it. Still wont start.

BUT

It makes little put put noises and grinds abit, and you can feel the exhaust coming out a tad. BUt it never catches. And believe me ive tried.

Only one or two things left to try since compression /should/ be fine. Thats cleaning out the carb, new plug and thats about it Crying or Very sad

Anyone wanna fix it for me...? Ill pay.... please .... Karma

They told me that when I took my broken bike in, but before they told me that they had told me it should be a simple fix and promised me £900 trade in for it, more fool them as it was knackered out of the ass (oil leak :<) and they wanted to only give me £400 for it, salesperson loyalty (we have had 6 bikes from the same shop/salesman) seemed to pay of though as they honoured the £900 price, and I had an excuse to get a very new and shiney bike, in fact the words "un-economical repair" were quite nice to hear as if it had been fixable I might have had it back and not got the new bike... I agree with Dr Nick here... CBR engines are common as muck, so just replace the whole shebang.

Not a new bike mate, it's a '91 H plater, but it's my baby, first since my test and all that, so if at all possible, i would have liked it repairing while I'm still "finding my feet" as it were. No, when I bought it I wasn't told, boought it in May & it's jusr recently knackered, some of you might remember my threads begging for advice at the time. Thing there being, I couldnt really go back to the swindling wankr I bought it off....(private) & complain as I've reallistically had it long enough to have had the apparently poor bodge done myself. Have also thought off that solution, & believe me, am going to look ito it. Cost allowing, it may be my answer, does anyone know the limit of how new i can go with engine before it won't fit my model?
Cheers for the replies guys. Confused Confused

Nope, it won't.

If yours is a 1991 bike, then a 91-94 engine will slot right in, absolutely guaranteed.

I *believe* you can get a 95-98 engine in, but I'd suggest some research on that one - maybe try the CBR forum (www.cbr-forum.org.uk). I think Smoto Bob's old bike was a 92 CBR with a 98 engine, might be worth dropping him a PM.

The 99 onwards engine is different as it was a major model change with a different frame and everything.

Good luck!

CBR600 engine shouldn't be too hard to find. Fill out the forms on Part Locator and Used Part Search. Also get yourself a copy of MCN and have a look through the breakers adverts in it and give a load of them a call. Or if you've really got a lot of time to kill call all the breakers listed in this thread. Razz

As I said, double check about the 95-98 fitting.

98 and one month is irrelevant, as long as it's not a 99+

The Hornet engine is just a slightly detuned CBR600 engine, and they've used the 95-98 CBR engine for longer, into the early 2000s at least. Might be worth some research there, they don't make that much less power in the real world so if you found a bargain it could be worthwhile.

The angle of the intake manifolds for the engine is different apparently, and the Hornet uses 34mm carbs rather than the standard 36mm on CBR's, the cylinder head is different because the hornet uses different cams, oh and btw i might have a hornet engine for sale Wink . Was sold to me as a Runner.

.

I know that, was taking t he pi$$, just feels like that's how my luck is going with this flaming bike.

Will get sorted, till then, bump starting it is, considered getting rid as a track bike, as it's fine other than won't start off the button. Once fired up, it's a fuggin lovely ride.

That's it, getting it out tomorrow............then I might go for a play on the bike Confused
