I've found a ticket inside that's laid out like this:

---------------
050001 - P

E6

003 - 0529

There's also a sticker on the side of the visor:

---------------
CROSS S.A.
E6 05 0001
---------------

It's a Laser Revolution.

Ta! Smile

Er..... by remembering when you bought it? Confused

And if you didn't buy it new, it's irrelevant cos you should chuck it in the bin, or grow flowers in it or something!

It was kind of the date of manufacture I was after. I thought that counted more than the length of time you actually owned the lid. I posted all the info that's on the lid, but it doesn't really tell you much.

Have a look on the straps. There is usually an embossed date which is the manufacture date. BTW, that is the only date that counts.

I know what you talking about, when I went for my lid I was told it had a 5 year life cos it was fibreglass. I think its once you start wearing it that the fibreglass begins to suffer wear n tear and pollutants might break down its structure. Dunno!

Age of manufacture doesn't matter a jot, it is the amount of time it has beenm in use since it was purchased that is important.

Most Japanese helmets are at least 18 months old before they even get to the UK, and until recently when self certification was introduced, they would sit in a bonded warehouse whilst a selection were sent off to BSI for testing.

Look at the january issue of Motorcycle Voyager, where all will be explained in respect of manufacture, fit, life of a helmet and so on.

As a general rule though, the date of manufacture is usualy on a label either stitched to the comfort liner or attached to the styrofoam liner under the comfort liner!

Asking about provided this info. I realise it's from American organisations, but I found it interesting. It would seem to contradict your asserstion that the age of manufacture doesn't matter a jot.

"…glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials, and general liner deterioration and helmet degradation can result from hair oils, body fluids, cosmetics, and normal "wear and tear." (Snell Foundation)

… recommend that helmets be replaced after five years since exposure to ultraviolet light may cause invisible deterioration (New Jersey Dept of Transportation)"

Read what I said! The age of manufacturer is unimportant, it is the time it has been in use as the liners react to heat and sweatm although the shell does not decompose, the liner will eventually become like a lump of concrete which is why a life of 5 years is recommended. However, the fact that it has been in its box and stored in a cool area will not start it degrading, it is when it is out in the open and in use that the process starts.

This is why when trying a new helmet off the shelf, always purchase one in its box as the degradation process will not yet have started, and it will ensure a proper fit as no one is likely (or at least the risk is less) of it having become mishapen because of people constantly trying it on.

I am off to Japan to the Shoei (and Arai) factory soon, I am sure that they will have their observations to make!

I did read what you said, but depending on how you read what I posted, you could come to the conclusion that it is implied that even before the helmet is worn... "...glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials, and general liner deterioration" Also, if a helmet is stored in a shop, you can't assume it's been kept in strict adherence to any possible storage guidelines the manufacturer might recommend.
I see what you're saying T.C, but I'm not convinced. Thanks for the info though, and it would be very interesting to hear the thoughts of the Shoei/Arai manufactuers. Smile

You obviously know the subject then and sounds like all the research and reports I do for Government bodies along with 20 years experience of examing motorcycle clothing (particularly crash helmets) post accident has been wasted then, Wink
