I decided to be cautious and get a new lid. It’s best to do it while I have the money. (I am not looking to continue the helmet lifespan argument, m'kay )
I went over to Glasgow on Saturday to the BMW Motorrad place in Kirkintilloch. I'd been reading reviews online and decided on a BMW Sportintegral. I measured my noggin and came out at a 58cm (medium). When I got there the guy suggested I try a 56/57 instead of the 58/59. He had me pulling it this way and that, but it wouldn't budge. Wow, that's snug, but I'm not getting headaches. I wandered around the shop for a good 10 minutes. Result! Finally a lid that fits properly!
It's disconcertingly quiet and is extremely light; 1350g compared to my 1850g Lazer Revolution. It came with the neck cushion and chin spoiler as standard which makes the lid almost painful to get on, I'm told this will relax slightly with use. The combination of these effectively seal the lid round your neck and as a result I am feeling slightly claustrophobic, but warm, and with no intrusion of wind unless invited by opening the vents.
I actually gave myself a black eye putting the lid on at slightly the wrong angle. Despite this, it's very comfortable once on and the venting is very good, you can actually feel the air rushing through when the forehead vent is open.
The visor is kind of strange. It doesn't steam up, but breath vapour seems to condense on it immediately. It doesn't form droplets though, it seems to run down the inside and slightly distort the view. I'll take this minor niggle over fogging up any day! I also got the breath deflector which was probably not worth the extra £5, but I wasn't sure what the lid would be like for steaming up when I bought it.
£190 all in with a nice BMW helmet bag to boot. However, I am now hankering after a two wheeled conveyance of Teutonic persuasion. Dream on, eh.

Now I've had the lid on and off a few times I know how I did it. The lid needs to be tilted forward slightly while taking it off, or the front of the neck cushion and chin spoiler dig into the eyes (yuk) as I'm removing the lid. Got a couple of slight shiners figuring that out. |
