COLLISION:
Journalist killed in A1 motorcycle accident.
The assistant editor of a magazine for high-performance motorcycle enthusiasts was killed when his bike was in collision with a car on the A1 yesterday.
Jamie Bartle was riding a black Aprilia RSV Mille motorcycle to work in Peterborough, where he held the post of assistant editor of the EMAP magazine Performance Bikes.

But as the 1000cc bike travelled down the southbound carriageway of the road at 8.45am it was in collision with a car near to the A6121 Ketton junction.

The carriageway was closed for nearly five hours while police officers dealt with the incident and diversions were in place as seven-mile tailbacks built up.

A spokesman for Leicestershire police said the family of Mr Bartle had been informed about his death, but his name would not be officially released until later today when his body had been formally identified.

Mike Armitage, road test editor of Performance Bikes, said staff at the magazine were devastated by news of Mr Bartle's death.

Officers investigating the accident are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw the motorcycle being ridden beforehand to contact them.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Pc Bryn Sabin in the road policing unit on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message and, when prompted, key in the officer's identification number 0448.

It can't just be me who is completely indifferent to this? Some person died, riding their bike, probably not their fault. Now it's sad and unfortunate, but it makes absolutely no difference to me whatsoever.

I can't remember the exact number, but someone was mentioning that there was something like three and a half thousand road deaths in 2002? That's ten a day. Plenty of people die all the time, one person's death doesn't mean anything much unless that person had any significance to me. Someone I didn't know existed, stopped existing. So?

I think that is a disgusting thing to say would it really hurt you to take 2 minutes out of ur obviously so busy schedule to take your head out of your ass and give a thought to his friends and family. Not only that he is another biker and as far as im concerned any biker is a friend of mine.

I do agree partially with what mchaggis says, as yes lots of people die every day on the roads, but also as Nkd says it being a bike magazine person does make it more "news". I do entirely see his point though as yes to everyone apart from his family and friends it's 'just another person' and Yeti I don't believe he is saying he doesn't care just that it is 'just another person' to him.

Hopefully the investigations won't put the blame onto him for the crash.

I was looking at the statistics that they published in RIDE mag november 2004... I was quite shocked at the amount of road deaths on motorcycles... There were 604 fatalities between 2002 and 2003.

News like this is not only sad but it kind of makes you reflect on how dangerous motorbikes are.

Us bikers tend to have more of a community thing between us than other road users.

At the risk of getting flamed here I would have to say that if the PB folks behave in a similar way to how they did (or claimed to do)when I used to read the magazine, I am just surprised something like this hasn't happened before now.

Obviously any untimely death is tragic but, according to their magazine at least, the PB crew ride like complete idiots on public roads and certainly encourage others to do so. I am sure many people will have seen the black and white sign to the right of the bar in the Cat and Fiddle...

This accident may not have been the bikes fault, from the sound of the report. They may never find out what happened but a nasty accident has been on the cards for a long time.

All due respect to close ones who have been left behind.
