You want to make something like this but possibly on a bit of a smaller scale to start with, well a lot smaller to start off.

The GPZ wouldn't survive a jump bigger than a curb.

I wrecked my rear tyre valve/tyre jumping the table top at lydd and clearing the triple, that was on a supermoto so I doubt a GPZ will hold up mate.

About 18 months ago when I used to BMX we have got a flat bit of land down behind a subway near my house... About 5 of us went down with spades, pick axes and garden forks. Began diging the top layer off to make smooth run up (Dosent really need doing if you are on a dirt bike).
Then we dug a huge hole around the corner and got tuns of mud etc...
We make the main shape of the double jump out if bricks and hardcore first. Then began packing it with this mud... Gave it a week or so to dry out and set. We rode it for a while. Then we were constantly repairing it beause the rain was loosening all the dirt up...

In the end we waited for a rainy day, then went down and sprinkled a bag of cement power over them, and they are still there now Mr. Green

When I used to BMX you have to put something solid in the middle, in one jump we had an abandoned car, and in another we had a washing machine, that's a good basis.

Yeah, the best technique is to find some rubble or logs and compact dirt around them. Thats all there is to it really... Razz

you could find as much ruble, brick etc and use it as a base and cover it with mud and pat it down would save lots of time than just making it from pure dirt.

Are you planning on charging them to use it, or just saying that they can use it as they'll more than likely also to into the pub? If you're not planning on charging then I'd go and speak to them and basically say that you've got the land and you'd be happy for them to build jumps on it and I'd expect they'll be happy to help build them.

I dunno if you have done anything about this yet, but try and get some input from them.

You could end up building a lovely looking ramp and get "thats too high/low/long/short, im not using that"

Also negotiating some rules would be a good idea (ie not using it after 8pm, any damages to be reported etc)

Sounds like a great idea Dean, however there are a few issues you need to keep in mind.
First, I assume the land does actually belong to you, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Any idea if the land is Zoned for residential or recreational use?
If not, then strictly speaking you must go to the district council and request a change of use - which depending on the position of the nearest houses/businesses, you are unlikely to get (although I haven't been to the pub, so I don't know what the area is like).

Even if it is zoned accordingly, strictly speaking you will need planning permission to build said ramps - and this can take ages Sad

However, if you build this without getting the zoning/permission, the chances of it coming to the councils attention are very slim (unless someone complains). Even if someone does complain, all they will do initially is visit you and explain that you need zoning/permission and to apply for it. If this is then refused they can take you to court to enforce the removal - however this is very unlikely to succeed as most judges will say 'I can see no problem, it can stay'.

So in a nutshell, build it and have some fun. Deal with any repercussions if and when they occur.
If you need any advice on this, send me a PM and I'll pass it on to MrsHippy who works in planning enforcement and she will advise accordingly (via the head of planning if needed).

Hope this helps a bit Very Happy

Defiantly lots of planing issues and you would technically need Planning Permission and Change of Use to do it (depending if the land is within your residential curtilage, if you are allowing the track to be used by people other then the house occupiers and if you are charging for it) – send me an e-mail at work if you want some advice. But as the Hippy says if you are in the middle of nowhere build it and use it and deal with the consequences as they occur.

Planning enforcement is a slow process with not many teeth and Government directive is that negotiations are entered into before any action is taken anyway. If you are taking down proper trees (rather than shrubs or fruit trees) check that you are not in a Conservation Area and that they are not protected by a Tree Preservation Order as working on those without notifying the Planning Authority is a Criminal Offence and goes straight to prosecution.

We're not in a conservation area and the land at the minute is just an empty field that belongs to the pub. The closest residential area is about a mile away. The land is apparently for recreational use, but I wont be charging for the use, just would like to see it used Very Happy

Hi there its Mrshippy my account appears to be locked out at the moment.

The planning responce:

The land will still need a change of use for that kind of use. If it is in the pubs residential cutrtalage (land under permanant use ancillary to the property) you may get away with using it for yourself but not for people residing at the property.

The hippy used the word 'zoned' which isnt entirely correct. A peice of land has an established use depending on what it has been used for in the past and for any length of time any change to that established use would require a change of use.

The land will not have an established use for a recreational motorcycle track.

Earthworks and engineering works also require a planning application to be made to the Local Planning Authority.

My responce:

I would do it and worry about it should someone report it to the Planning Authority which as you are in the middle of nowhere is highly unlikley and the most action they would take is to get you to take it all down or decide that using the publics money to prosecute cfor something that might get permission anyway is not expedient to persue.
