Hi all,

As I was leaving college today I almost lost it.

The way you have to leave is to turn immediatly left onto a busy road where lots of cagers make a habit of not letting you go so you have to go quick. So I did.

As I did (revving high and slipping the clutch slowly) the back wheel slid out to the right and then as I righted myself it flicked back to the left. Bear in mind the road is damp and probably quite oily too.

What's this called? Highside, lowside or just "I'm-a-dumbass-and-should-take-it-easier-"side? Confused

Could lead to a highside . The rear loses grip and suddenly re-grips and turns you into superman till you hit the floor or something pointing up like a lamppost then reality sets in .Thumbs Up

Yep. Sounds a little like the way I broke my arm if you replace the damp with gravel, the left with right and there not being much traffic. All just because I went too hot from an almost standstill.

Not so far off my escapades last night - sounds like you did a better job of handling it than I did! You get the lesson without the bruises!

If you need to pull out faster. You really shouldn't have to, but if you do, point your bike more "down the road"/"inline with the road" (when waiting for a chance) that way the tyres won’t have to deal with so much : i.e. both the power and the bike turning. More just the power being out down.

But dont let it compromise your position in the road, ie because cars can find space around you, which you want for yourself: for safetly reasons. Cover your ground.

Hope you understand.

Cheers all,

It was quite nervy. Reason why it happened was because some numbnuts cager decided to go around me at the "1 vehicle only" exit and he was probably going into the lane I wanted to be in (1 way system) so had to beat him there too otherwise he'd have got in the way and i'd have missed the next turn...as in my pic below

Edit: I'm quite impressed with that pic!

This has happened to me more times in the last week than it ever did in the last 2 years on a ptw. Horrible. Today I decided to just take it easy and wait for a bigger gap. I still felt the back wheel slip, but not as bad. My main problem at the moment is that the main road I go home on has two building sites not 200ft apart and the road is covered is wet, oily slippy-slidey mud. Thumbs Down I feel a complaint coming on... Evil or Very Mad

Unlucky.

Although I will offer this for consideration, next time would you prefer to miss your turn or end up on the tarmac?

Apparently, in the UK, it is illegal to go around a roundabout more than twice at a go.

If it is like it looks and he crept into your space... Never ride so close to the edge of the road that cars can sneek up and use your bit of the lane, they will... your paying tax, insureance and have some form of licence, so don't feel obliged to let anyone else use your space!

Yeh thats the kind of junction i hate, added to the fact you get diesel spillages where vans are swinging arround corners and it can get interesting, cats eyes are bad too!

+ what claud said, I'd only ever pick up on it recently, the less you have to turn/lean/brake the better, just dont put yourelf in line with people cutting corners or prats sneeking up the side of you...

I seem to be having lots of near misses at the moment, i was going round a nice easy bend today, 10 mph, though id speed up just slightly, wham out goes my back wheel luckily i managed to get my leg down and turn it into a speedway turn untill i righted back again, funnily enough i wasnt at all shaken up and just carried along on my little 35 moph journey.

This has happened to me quite a lot recently, just give it a little too much welly while turning and the back starts to let go, it's a very scary and sobering thing to happen.

Just thank god that it did re-grip again rather than just lowsiding and laying your nice bike on the floor.

Looks like you were not 'dominating' your lane/line. Don't worry about cars, get your space and keep it. If you need to look them in the eye, stick your arm out and point to where you are going...do it! Let them know you know they are there and you will not take any crap, keep your wits about you though.

Depends which way round your going Razz

I had the same type of thing happen as you Mantzy turning left into a road between my school and the girls school next door on some icy leaves. Big loud noise as the back wheel went round really fast while the back end slides sideways. I managed to keep it up which i was glad about, and just looked like i was showing off (from some of the 'wow's i got when i parked up further down hehe)

Someone explain what Highside/Lowside are?
Question
Never heard that term.

Yes there is a limit - Thought it was three times though!

Then again just checked Highway code and no mention of it! We were told 3 times on CBT though!

Question

Lowside is where you generally lose the front end on a corner and the bike slides away, and the rider remains on the low side. Hence Lowside.

A highside is a /lot/ more nasty. It happens when you lose the rear and it slides out, then moving outwards quite quickly, it grips again slinging the rider into the air like a catapult.

Over the high side of the bike... hence Highside. Smile

HTH.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It's actually quite an interesting experience for about .3 of a second, before your mind catches up and remembers that you'll be hitting the ground soon!

Any advance on three? Laughing

And can you imagine some copper standing there counting the number of times you'd been round just so he could issue you a ticket? Shocked

From that diagram I would've said you were in the wrong lane? Confused

surely from the lane you were in you should've turned into the the lane, not the right one?

I say this because there is a junction identical to this in Perth. The left lane should turn into the left lane, the right into the right.

Anyways, least you weren't hurt. Perhaps a cheap winter hack is on the cards? Not enough power to spin the rear wheel like your bike just did! Save the sportsbike for the summer?

Acid, if you read his post it's a one vehicle exit. The car had no right pulling along side him. Although you have to wonder, would he have pulled alongside a car in the same place?

Don't think it is an actual hard and fast limit, more of a guideline the police use.

All the best
