I was on my way to work in my car this morning and had just reached the end of my road when I had 'an incident'.

My road runs parallel with the A27 and joins up with it near a BP garage. Where the road reaches the garage forecourt it narrows a fair bit and I always slow down as I approach due to the narrower road & a sharp right hand bend.

As I approached the narrow bit I saw a chap on a yellow moped leaving the garage forecourt on my right. I watched him look over his right hand shoulder, but he didn't slow down or look left in my diecrtion at all.
"Stop now, OK STOP NOW!" I thought to myself as he just kept on coming.

He then drove straight out in front of me, swan-necking onto my side of the road! He saw me as he took the corner, threw down the moped and came off. :o
All I could think of as this was happening was "Sh*t he's going under the side of my car!!"
Anyway, contact was not made, I put my hazards on , checked my mirrors for anyone coming up behind and jumped out to help him.

He had already jumped up and picked up the 'ped and was getting back on. I asked him if he was OK and he said he was fine and it was his fault for not looking. He adjusted his left mirror, which came off in his hand.

I said to him to check his brakes - meaning to make sure they worked after the spill and before he rode off, but he just looked at me and said he was sorry for not looking. I think that he thought I was being funny, making out that he should use his brakes!

I told him I had a bike too and that he should take it easy and be safe. He rode off before I even got back in the car. I think he might have felt a bit embarrassed.

I set off again & got about 1 mile down the road to find 2xpolice cars and an ambulance next to a black bike on it's side on the Sainsbury's roundabout.

I hope the rider was Ok, the bike didn't look too bad. The thought did go through my mind that if I had driven like the majority of people do down my road that the police & ambulance would have been called out for the 'ped rider too!

I don't have to report this encounter as an accident to the police do I?

I don't think so. You didn't hit him. He just fell off. Thumbs Up for stopping. Smile

Report it anyway, just go into the police station and report what happened, take your documents. They will note it down in their daybook with complete disinterest but if anything came of it, you covered your arse.

This is from someone who was reported for Hit and Run and had the police turn up at his parents house ready to arrest him. I was able to fukc the coppers right off because I had already reported the incident at my local cop shop.

As you say, he was probably embarrased. At least you stopped and asked the right questions.

I agree you should report it, sometimes the aches and pains dont kick in till a while after and its then he may report it as an accident.
Better safe than sorry.

Although I have a car I commute to work every day on the bike, Its no wonder some car drivers treat all bikers with contempt when I see some of the piss poor riding. Commuters on scooters I find the worse especially for pulling out from betwwen cars when I am filtering. It seems to be a lets not look just suck and see attitude and never a nod of apology for making you brake hard to avoid them.

Just phoned Fareham Police Station, took time of incident, name, address & my car details, and that's that.

Thanks for feedback,

Zephyrgirl.

I saw the guy on the black bike this morning as well zepyhrgirl, just as the ambulance was going to hospital. Looked like he had jumped off the footbridge until I saw the bike (which seemed fairly undamaged, so I hope the rider is too.)

Very much doubt anything will come of it, if he was that keen to get back on his bike and go elsewhere I expect he doesn't have insurance and so wasn't considering anything other than getting away without police involvement.

Oooh, nasty. Haven't had any incidents myself in the car but had a rather my-heart-just-skipped-a-beat today on the bike.

Calmly going through a pedestrian zone, both sides have two lanes and I'm in an area with lots of students kicking about. One decided that ebcause a bus had just stopped, that he'd walk out infront of it(I couldn't see him) and walk across the other lane on the LHS of the road, which he obviously forgot about.

Had to slam on the brakes, I was approaching probably a bit quickly but I was only about 5m infront of him when he jumped out. Forced me into the other side of the road so I didn't knock him over. Clipped his arm with my wing mirror and gave him the fright of his life, with a mouthful of abuse too.

Half my fault, half his really, although I don't usually think this straight and blame it all on that cnut....
