Hi folks, I have recently derestricted my NSR, and since then when riding it has bogged down and refused to go above 7500 -8000 revs (it was also idling at only 1000 revs despite reaching the limit of adjustment). I have surmised that, due to removing the restrictor plate in the inlet manifold, too much fuel is entering the cylinder and choking the plug etc. To alleviate this I have moved the circlip on the throttle needle up one notch to lean the mixture and readjusted the idle. It now runs fine with a nice and even pull through the revs up to the redline. I just wanted to check in with you collective geniuses that I wont be breaking the engine by leaning the mixture like this.

Cheers guys Thumbs Up

PS I remember a thread on here from yonks ago about someone finding tamperproof bolts on their manifold near to where the restrictor plate is. If anyone has the same problem and wants some advice on how to remove them, then drop me a pm Thumbs Up Wink

Obviously you have to be careful when leaning the mixture, but it sounds like it is running well Thumbs Up

The state of the spark plug will also give a good idea, perhaps have a good long ride on it then do a plug chop.

There are plenty of pictures of spark plug conditions to see at https://www.dansmc.com/spark_plugs/spark_plugs_catalog.html
to tell how rich it is running. Obviously, running without enough oil is most dangerous, so err on the rich side if needs be.

Rich/lean is reference to petrol/air mixture. Oil is an entirely seperate part of the equation, and shouldn't be tampered with.

Cheers folks, thanks for the advice. So providing I havent mucked about with the oil feed or pump (which I haven't), then I shouldn't have too much to worry about regarding seizing (other than the thousand other ways a 2t can expire Very Happy )

Hi

Running lean (ie, not enough fuel for the amount of air) will cause the engine to run hot (as can having the ignition timing set wrongly, using the wrong grade spark plug and numerous other things). A hot running engine is liable to seize (the piston expands with the heat, and can get too big for the bore).

All the best

Keith

if there was a problem that would cause engine damadge it would be causing it to run hot most likely. if it is still normal on the temp gauge thewn sounds good to me.
if it is reving cleanly to the red line then there should be no problem.
