PostPosted: 19:52 - 21 Mar 2004    Post subject: Bike mechanics course Reply with quote

I am quite interested in doing some sort of begginers bike mechanics course and it would have to be night school. Has anybody any idea what courses are out there on this sort of thing?

I've tried a few places, but no joy.

Cheers

I do evening classes in mechanics but that's down in Portsmouth so only thing I can suggest is to try all your local colleges etc.

I can't mate I'm afraid as the college themselves don't know. It's one of two courses and at the minute we are learning both syllabus's so when they finally decide what course we are doing we will be ready for the test.

College's are useless but most likely City & Guilds.

Sorry I can't help more mate.

I'm on the City and Guilds 3991 Motorcycle Basics course which isn't basic at all, well not to me anyway... i do my course at Merton College near Wimbledon there's a website www.merton.ac.uk they're meant to be the best for motorcycle courses, and i can say the teaching is the best i've had in years. the course can either be taken in 30 weeks on either monday or thursday evenings or in 10 weeks on fridays. there's a follow up course if you want mroe engine knowledge which im already signed up to start next week, but there's also a progression course that is for anyone over 21 that basicly covers the first two years of a modern apprenticeship but for older ppl who already have jobs, but its 2 days a week, otherwise you do the modern apprenticeship scheme where you're at college once a week and the rest is at a garage somewhere. i think thats all the info i can give for now without going on too long, ask me if you got any more Q's

Karma That's great thanks. like I said I have asked some colleges about it and I just got some shrugs of shoulders and a "dunno". Confused

But armed with this info I'm going to try again to find somewhere that does this. i think I'm going to the Moray coast to work for a year though and I'll need to try to find something up there Neutral

Thanks again. Thumbs Up

Yer i will look into it. I'm currently at Southdowns college at this very moment. I'm doing a AVCE ITC course. Once i've finished i will apply for it, should 2 A-levels, GCSE: 1 A, 3 B's and 2 C's get me in for the advance course. I already know quite alot about bikes i've just restored a cagiva supercity (i rebuilt the engine, stripped it right down to get the frame powder coated and everything else). I'm getting a 500cc 2 stroke supermoto bike shortly for when i pass my test. Thats going to be fun Twisted Evil .

Hi Guys, I only just came across this great site and found this stuff about mechanics courses. I did some checking and there are only about 10 or 12 colleges doing bike courses. Merton was closed for a while (it might still be closed) while they were doing some building or something. But I saw that Lambeth College (in London) are running courses and have been for over a year now in a new workshop. They are starting a fast-track one for NVQ Level 1 City & Guilds in January 2005 and are going to do an evening one in September 2005. Might be worth a look.
Ah well, back to my old XJR1300

I never thought about doing it from home. It would be quite hard I would imagine. Even if you had your own bike you wouldn't get the same range of stuff to work on as you would at college, would you?
And with MY luck and skill, who could bail me out when I broke things. LOL

I'm currently doing my degree from home (well the library mostly) and the only real problem with distance learning that Ive found is a lack of interaction with real people. That and getting the motivation to do it!

The help of a tutor can't be overstated - its little things like that you miss compared to classroom/tutorial type setting.

Having a f***** motorbike would probably be quite handy as an aid as well - putting what you learn into practice
