Hiya,

I expect some people on here have/had GPZ 500s? I'm thinking of getting one, was just wondering what the cost of Insurance is - its same group as the ER-5 i'm lead to believe - (so tell me if you have an ER-5 too!)

CIA whom I am using as a benchmark (comparing between bikes to see what gives me a lowish figure) are quoting me £900.

If it looks like I'm getting it I will be calling round, or more likley investing in Danny's services.

Cheers,

Craig

I currently own a GPZ500S, and I pay £370 odd TPFT with CIA Insurance.
I was initially quoted £600 TPFT, but I managed to get it down to nearly half that by ringing about.

Also £900 isn't too bad to be honest, I paid £1100 TPFT on an ER-5 at 17.

Plus the GPZ is a very good bike, they have a decent ammount of power (60BHP Claimed) and are really comfortable. They also have a really nice powerkick at 7000RPM, and mine has kept me entertained for nearly 4 months now and I am not tiring of it!

Things to look out for on them is on the older ones Alternator magnets tend to let go causing a big bill, they also have a tendency to get rain water in the fuel tanks.

Apart from that there a damned good bike!

I had the '92 GPZ500 as my first bike, I was 18 straight after getting my licence. I phoned around quite a bit and got my quote down to £428 TPFT with Carole Nash Thumbs Up

That will more likely than not be my next bike (my dads) once the good weather comes round. If I insure it once my 125 policy runs out I will be 18 with 2 years NCB, so hopefully about sub £800 would be a nice figure.

Cool,

cheers for that... *craggles is working out his budget*

What are your opinions on the GPz? The one I'm looking at is an N reg, 96 model. Looks in good nick, some corrosion on the engine casing behind the fairing though. Motad exaust, didn't ask why it had been changed, but was road legal. Been used as a curtesy bike for a year at a dealers... good in the way that it's been serviced regularly (so says the dealer), bad in the way that while on loan, people may not have taken care of it. Wasn't run from new as a Curtesy bike, previous owner used it as a stepping stone to a larger bike like I am thinking of doing. £1395 on the road - restriction inc. in price. Tax/MOT till August 05.

Basically I'd like to use it to do some distance - it may have to carry me from London to Southampton, Southampton to Birmingham, and Sotton to Bristol once or month or so (only one of those journeys though!)... maybe more... and also quite a bit of commuting to/from college/work/wherever else. So it needs to be comfortable to ride (it's got a fairing, reasonable looking seat/riding position) and be able to carry some luggage (you can get a carrier, reasonable pillion seat for bungies)...

Will be taking my dad down tmz for a closer look/sit/talk with the dealer.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

Cheers,

Craig

Well I think I've decided to buy it... In my first round of calls Motorcycle Direct quoted me £682.30 TPFT, or £723.41 Comp. (Comp is worth it for an extra £40!). So far no one has been able to beat that, but Carole Nash and CIA are closed today, amongst others so I'll be trying Monday!

Elite decided I was too young to ride the bike, and refused to quote me.

Have also been quoted £310.26 for half a year (Till May 13th) by MCE - as an additional bike on my current policy (TPFT)

How much of an effect does being 18, and having a Yr. No Claims have on Insurance (from people's experiences...)
