Now then Thumbs Up

It was my last day of Uni yesterday, so there i am all excited to go home, so i jumped on my bike, fired her up (Suzuki 650) and off i go......until i come to a very abrupt halt because.....I'VE LEFT THE DISC LOCK ON! Shocked

haha, stupid i know, I did a superman off the bike onto the road, bike crashed down and smashed a few things up as you can imagine. £250 damage i reckon. Worst part, there was some girlies watching. Thumbs Down

Question is though, do you think any stress/fatigue could have been done to my front disc brake? Do you think i should get it checked out??

It was an Oxford Boss disc lock...

Give the calliper a good check over. It is not unheard of to crack the alloy calliper body.

For future reference, get yourself a 1/2" piece of fuel hose and slide it over the key to the disc lock. When you take it off to fit the lock, slide it over the ignition key. This will prevent you putting the key in the bike. "Why is there a bit of fuel line on my key? Oh yes, I remember, got to take the disc lock off."

I THINK its best to put the disk lock in the appropriate place to avoid such a "superman" incident.

If you're not going to reverse the bike when starting it, then put the disc lock one set of holes away from the caliper. So that, when you set off, you do go forward but don't get too much momentum building up so that when you cxome to a stop, you SHOULD'NT go flying off.

Thats what I do. Haven't tested that theory yet though, as I ain't forgotten to take it off Wink

I think you should invest in one of these...

From personal experience I would recommend Stinkwheel's method.

I used to put the carry sack for the disc lock over my throttle... I've been doing this since I had my first ever disc lock about three years ago. Until last week, when some little scally kids - and I could see them sitting on the bench giggling - pinched my carry sack. Evil or Very Mad

People will pinch anything - including a seemingly useless tiny sack, or an alarmingly orange boingy reminder chord!

I think every rider who owns a disc lock has left it on before...sadly, u pulled off before realising...usually when people do this they only smash their mudguard.

I haven't, but that's because my disc lock is somewhere on the roads around Mansfield and Worksop. The Motrax ones are crappily painted, have crappy useless carrying bags with an utterly useless strap and were the type which could be opened with a biro.

Perhaps I should get a shackle or something. I normally wrap the chain around the rack anyway, so if I'm worried about parking it with anything more than the steering lock, I tend to just put that on. (Having chained it up I left the keys in the ignition today whilst I was going to the uni library. Embarassed )

Ive only ever reversed with my disk lock on and it makes your front brake go totally dead and you have to pump the lever several times to get it to work. Confused

Ive got an alarming sticker

"WARNING"
Disklock is secure do not atempt to ride away...

Its only small but its Highlighter yellow and on ly handlebars right by my ignition button...

(Only reason I reversed out with disk lock on is because It was dark and didnt see the sticker Wink )

Unlucky mate but i must admit its an easy mistake to make! My own technique is to carry the lock in its little bag, and when you put the lock on put your bike keys in the little bag and put it in your pocket. That way you have to take the key out of the locks bag before you can do anything, and if you still try and ride off then its your own fault!!!

Wink Thumbs Up

I know someone who did that and fucked up the disc. It bent it a bit and he had to get a new one.
