At a guess, I'd say the power valve has something to do with it. Theres the possibility theres a restrictor cone in the exhaust but very few 125's are restricted this way.

If its restricted any way like the DT, I'd say play around with the power valve. Chances are it will just need adjusting/opening.

Hi

Cannot remember off the top of my head, and cannot find the magazine I was looking for that listed it. Think the exhaust was most of it.

If it is doing 87mph then it is most certainly derestricted. Restricted it would struggle much beyond 70mph.

All the best

Keith

Newer KMX's were only ever restricted in the exhaust, like the NSR the powervalve is always working. There is no re-jetting needed either and you should have 20bhp at the wheel now. The std gearing will not go much over 80mph, but going up 1tooth on the front will take it to about 86-87mph, and if you ride on the road only its better! off road the lower gearing is what you want.
You can tune the KMX like most other 125's but the silencer and airbox intake are very restrictive on the KMX. If you take the airbox lid off and cut the top out of it, and re-jet with a 107.5-110main jet you gain a couple of bhp. The silencer is heavy and restrictive, and to a slightly lesser extent so is the pipe. A full system will probably give a couple more bhp at least.
