Sidi boots, only have had two pairs of boots (one pair i borrowed from a mate and my own) i recommend any boot from Sidi. Not sure of the model of mine but its very comfortable, i wear it all day at college, and have done for the last 4months, so i dont have to take any other shoes in as im lazy. LOL.

I have always sworn by british army issue combat or assult boots. Keep them well waxed and they will keep your feet warm, dry and safe.

My last pair of older issue combat hi-leg boots (IMO better than the more recent assult boots) cost me £25 from the army surplus guy at our local car boot sale. Brand new!

The only downside is the only way to break them in is to get them wet then walk about for a few hours until they have dried out. After you have done this, they are the best fitting footwear you will ever own, my feet kind of 'thunk' into mine when I pull them on.

I got the Frant Thomas Aqua range, slightly cheaper than Sidi but i found them comfortable, sporty and just as waterproof/armoured.

Larger variety to where i was at least.

On the army boots issue.

They are nice looking and tough on the toe..

But there is a lack of any shin protection other than the leather whereas alot of actual bike boots have shin guards.

Also the lack of a gear plate (a hardened/double covered area of leather under where the gear lever will be) so could become marked/scratched/discoloured (or whatever leather tends to do) alot easyer.

And its not uncommon for them to be considerably bulky, and there could become issues with bending your foot to get it under the gear shifter on some of the sportier bikes. And being heavy might find it difficult to adapt to the amounts of pressure needed on the back brake or when down shifting.

Well, all I can say is my latest pair have covered about 40k miles on my bike and are still in really good nick (like wearable out in town with a coat of polish). Still waterproof.

I am still wearing my previous pair which have been demoted to 'work boots' every day and they are about seven years old, the sole is just starting to come away from the uppers now.

The toecaps and heels are reinforced leather so gearshifting is not a problem (used to ride my 350 powervalve with rearsets in them). I don't see how you are going to suffer a severe impact to your shins in a motorbike crash, and if two layers of double stitched leather aren't going to do the job, I fail to see what will.

They aren't all that heavy, can't see them being heavier than any other sort of boot, I ran my basic fitness test in the TA wearing them and I am a fat bastard.

I think there is a lot of fashion marketing involved in the motorbike boot sector and some of them are so rediculously armoured that you can't walk about in them, which to me is a major plus point of the combats, saves carrying another set of footwear to change into.

I can definately recommend the Alpinestars GPS3 WP boots - as recommended by Ride - they are very warm and adequately waterproof - rode through a storm in them last month and were A-OK - left me feeling dry and toasty - shame i was wearing jeans tho and not my waterproofs. Broken in after 2 weekends riding so it now feels comfortable - doesn't have the trickest features, but is as waterproof as it gets without venturing into Goretex territory (expensive)

Sidi Vertebras are nice too.

aah what i meant for changing gear is that your standard sports boot is considerably less high at the toe than an army issue boot, and if someone isnt used to it they might make contact with the lever earlier/when their not expecting it.

But of course if your used to it/dont find it a problem then they do have a lot of plus sides, your right they do simply refuse to fall apart. Thumbs Up
