On the 8th of last month, I was lucky enough to obtain my first ever parking ticket. I was sat in a friends flat in the middle of Cheltenham town centre. We were sat in his front room, so I was able to look out over the street and could see my bike through the window. Now, I'm fully aware that I've parked him on double yellows, which was a pretty dumb idea looking back, but at the time it seemed like a pretty good idea - I mean, there were loads of other cars parked on the double yellows down the road.

Anyways, I'd been at my friends flat for about 10 minutes when some bastard traffic warden trundles up to my bike, and I watch him check it out for ages.

"Haha! You're going to get a ticket mate" my friend says, offering his advise on the matter.
"Nah, It's all good!" I reply "He won't do anything".

Then we watch as he wraps a wee plastic bag looking thing around my mirror and strolls off. Damn it! I noticed that he didn't do anything to the other cars around me, turned out that they all had whopping great 'Disabled Person, let me park on double yellows' sticker.

Well that was over 28 days, and I still haven't payed it due to lack of cash/movtivation to get anything done. Should I be worried about the 5-0 coming and asking me politly to give them a whole load of money? Or do these things tend to blow over and get forgotten about?

I bet most people here, have boycotted a parking ticket many a time. Smile hehe

Are you talking about 'the chair' in the capital punishment sense, or the Worldwide Wrestling Federation sense? I think the latter would be a loads more fun. Smile

Well i dont know alot about this as its never happend, but if it just simply "blows over" then there wudnt be much point in it, theyl get you in the end, pay the fine, save alot of hassle from the twats at the council.. just out of interest how much was it ?

perhaps getting a disabled sticker for your bike wud be a good idea Thumbs Up or even one of those wheel chair carriers they have on roofs of cars Laughing

Parking tickets rarely 'blow over', the wheels of, er, bastardised-justice, grind slowly but grind they do. You can of course appeal the ticket if you think you have any grounds.

If however you don't do anything, the charge begins to grow, slowly at first, then with increasing rapidity until you end up with visits from baliffs looking to collect several hundred quid for what was initially a fifty quid or so ticket.

Alternatively for persistent non-payers I believe some councils now take the offending vehicle away without warning and crush it. Confused

I got a parking ticket earlier in the year (in a car, but hey, still same fine). If you don't pay within the notified time they will double it (or at least my one would have been). You can appeal, but it doesnt sound like you've got much of a case to be honest mate. Some authorities will still charge you the greater amount rather than reduced fine if you lose the appeal

It was a £30 fine, and I can invisidge an apeal:

Dear Sir, Please let me off...

Dear Sir, No.

Perhaps some of you have a valid point, and leaving it to blow over would be a classic example of teenage ignorance. I would already be late on the payment - by a week or so. Would this mean if I pay it now I'll get fined even more?

I got off a parking ticket by telling them that I had been broken down at the bike was parked in the safest possible way at the location and was moved as soon as I was able to get it picked up or fix it (can't remember which I said).

Pay within 14 days and you can pay half.
Pay within 28 days and pay the full.
Leave it any longer, pay double.
Have it randomly chug on a bit longer than that, pay more, they send the boyz round.

They won't let it drop - I had several threatening letters about various tickets that were chewing their way through the appeals system. One of them got up to £250 from an initial £50 before I got it nuked.

Have they sent you a letter yet reminding you that you haven't paid? Cos your best bet now is to wait til that happens and appeal on a 'what ticket?' basis... if you say the initial ticket must have been stolen / blown away and that's why you haven't paid it, you may well get it reset to the original £30 - especially with bikes being quite hard to stick them to.

I've not had a letter yet, as it's only just passed the 28 days. I like the idea of the 'wha... parking ticket?' thing and may well put that into effect when the time comes.

Do you think I'd get screwed if I just tried to pay the normal fine (30 squids) after the deadline date?

Yes, cos the scale of fees is clearly stated on the ticket.

Be like going to the checkout in Tesco and deciding to only pay a fiver of your £20 shopping bill. Smile

I've had quite a few over the last few years in Stockton, always waited til after the 30 days as stated and sent in the 14 day amount. They have never been back to ask for the rest Laughing

If you still have the original ticket, it will have a Bank Giro Credit slip attached to it. Take this to the post office and use it to pay the fine at the lower amount.

As m99dws says, they never come looking for the rest of it, even if you have gone over time. Mate of mine did this when the baliffs arrived, just nipped down the post office and paid the fine directly then waved the stamped reciept in their face. They didn't know what the hell to do and so did nothing. It is called putting the cat amongst the pigeons.

Head meet sand.. sand.. head.

Only got one idea, check the double yellow lines outside his house again. Go right to the end. If there is a break in them (due to say... road works tarring over them) OR if the end of them is not connected with a perpendicular line overlapping the two completely you do not have to pay.

Was a story a while ago about a chap who noted the fact that they HAVE to be connected at either end as it signifies an end to the yellow lines. If they are not then they have not been finished being painted and they dont apply. (like building half a traffic light and getting mad if someone skips it)

Or at least... thats as far as i know.

Suddenly a £30 parking ticket seems like a great way to afford a new bike Cool

I also heard from a mate (tho not 100% sure it's true) that if you send in 30 cheques of £1.00 each (or however many it is) they will cancel the ticket as although technically you've paid it would cost them more to bank the cheques than they would get out of it.

Personally I wouldn't risk it, but if money is no object then it might be a laugh to try....
