Probably stupid question, but does anyone bother with these when on a bike? Obviously its pointless getting one and sticking it on the bike as its pretty definate that some chav will nick it and put it on their car, but are you expected to buy one anyway to show that you have paid for the parking if required?

Cheers

As you said Stu-i dont bother as someone is bound to nick it. Having said that-at some places you have to enter the reg plate number of your vehicle-so maybe that excuse doesnt always work. Confused

If I'm somewhere where I know I need a ticket, I tear it in half from top to bottom, leave half on the bike and keep half with me, but most places you don't need to bother (it usually tells you on the ticket machine).

I've just got a parking fine in leeds, I paid and displayed, but the ticket went walkies. Now I've gotta write them a letter explaining. hte guy on the phone said they recommend carrying the ticket with you, I asked where they recommend this as there's nothing written about bikes anywhere.

In certain areas of London you have to 'pay & display' if there are no bike parks. What I tend to do is stick half the ticket in my pannier (Box at the back of the bike). If someone tries to remove it they get half a ticket, I have the other half so if there is a dispute I have evidence that I had bought one.

I usually tuck mine in behind the screen just above the headlight. No many people can see them there anyway so I've never had any nicked. Remember, the sign says 'failure to display results in a fine' or something...

If the carpark is on private property, just take your numberplate with you. They can't issue a ticket if they don't know which numberplate to issue it to and they are not allowed to clamp without a numberplate. This method was in the papers a while back. My numberplate is velco'd on anyway so it's easy.

Don't try it on public property where a policeman might happen to walk past though.

If you've got a camera phone, stick the ticket on your bike and photograph it.

Then if it's nicked, you can show that you did buy it!

Thumbs Up

The car park i often go in, yeah you dont have to pay for a ticket, you have to park it in the motorcycle park which is about 1 meter wide and 1 and a half long, and better still its the only place on the car park where there is a slope and thats where they decide to put the dam motorcycle park, do they not realise we dont have hand brakes, and you have to lean them ect ect (yes i know u use gears to stop it rolling). But saying that, id prefer that than not paying for a ticket thats going to be stolen.

I went to sainsburys car park on my scooter once. The sensor in the floor didnt recognise i was there and the stupid machine didnt print me a ticket. I drove round the barrier and parked by some other peds, wondering how they got in too Confused I drove past the barrier on the way out too...

Anyone know how to do it properly?

If I park in a Pay and Display then I will buy a ticket, but keep it on my and not leave it on the bike, then if I do get a ticket I have proof that I have paid and I use the fact that if I left it on the bike it would have probably been stolen!

Are you sure they can't do anything to your bike if it's private property and doesn't have a number plate on it? Private property I'd have thought if you choose to leave a random lump of metal on it is your own look out.

Covering your plate on roads is all well and good but they just remove whatever you're covering it with, you're not going to ring the police to report their crime "Hi, I parked my bike illegally on the road with my number plate covered so they couldn't give me a ticket as they're not allowed to touch my bike and they did and gave me a ticket!!" It's not going to work, well it might but I wasn't willing to find out so someone else can do it. Razz

Remove your plate and disc there is the chance they'll just call the police who will then tow it and give you a big bill. :-\

where i work (£ stretcher Smile Cool ) we use a huge car park (pay n display) n me n my mate, park in seperate car parking spaces (the two outside the shop) and never buy parking tickets for 3 main reasons!

1: it REALLY pee's the traffic warden off (theres a sign on the ticket machines saying about bikes not needing them)

2: most of the customers for our shop park in those 2 spaces, so we get loss customers = ALOT LESS WORK

3: it REALLY annoys my manager, 'cos when he goes to park in that spot, as he's reversing we fly passed him and park in them Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

There is a Waitrose car park I have been in that offers free parking for bikes, but there are barriers on both entrace and exit. To get in you push a button for a ticket...but to get out? You would either have to pay (not likely! Rolling Eyes ) or scoot around the barrier. Like you said, surely there must be a proper way?

the car park i go in for work has a motorcycle entrance/exit which is a narrow path, about 3 foot wide, and 9 foot long.

it gets a bit amusing when i finish my shift, ride out of the car park, as my mate rides in to the car park;)

I don't tend to park in these places. I park where ever i wish to park, as long as it isn't a stupid place like in the middle of the town centre, or in the middle of the pavement where people are likely to complain.

however i did get some funny looks from the construction workers on the gate

abd this was after 30 minutes of finding sumwhere to park so i was bored

the car park i tried first said "you must have a vehicle to enter" - i supose its to stop kids gettin tickets

Yeah, you need a valid ticket to make it open the barriers for you.

However you can very very easily just go round the barriers or follow a car out. Don't do this too much as they might notice. Whistle

Guess you'd have to cover it up, there was something about how normal traffic wardens/parking people arn't allowed to move anything that obstructs the tax disk or something. I can't remember really tbh. If I could be bothered i'd dig up the article i read on it with the details.
