Hello.

Im considering buying a Derbi Senda but i was a little concerned about the mileage of a particular bike. Its done 15000 miles. I read somewhere that when they get to around this mileage the engine may require rebuilding?? Is this true?
I basically want to keep it for a year before buying a car but i dont want to buy it and then have to spend a couple of hundred pounds to get the engine rebuilt if it blows. Is this likely to happen??
How long do 50cc engines usually last?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

A 50cc engine will last just as long as any other engine.. as long as you care for it. In theory, they should even last longer.. because theres less moving parts in one.

BUT, they need propper care, and the 15,000 mile rebuild, often even less then that..

The first 50cc I rebuilt was a Suzuki FS50. I didnt even buy a manual because it was so simple.. but I would recommend you buy a Haynes manual as the Senda is i believe, liquid cooled.

Shopping list:
Haynes manual
Top end gaskets, (should be 2)
Piston rings
New spark plug
And if you havent got one, an small socket set..

If you have the above, you should be ok to do it yourself. Its so very simple, anyone can do it. Read the manual, give yourself a day or 2, and your done.

If your stuck, ask here. Im pretty sure there are others with 2 stroke experience here. But it would save you quite a few bob to do the job yourself, plus having the fun of A) learning how it all works, and B) knowing how to rebuild 2 stroke engines..

All the above parts shouldnt even cost you more then 90 squids including a fairly good socket set!

How long is a piece of rope?

Like ninja said no reason a fifty wouldnt last as long as any other engine, but its incredibily subjective.

Maintanance, servicing, not crashing, warming it up, letting it cool down, how cold it is when you ride, how hard you ride it.

Theres alot of things to consider.

Best idea is to look through bike trader, see what a brand new bike is worth, then a second hand bike and compare the price drop with mileage.

Once you notice that they arent running anymore, then you can see what kind of mileage gives you some idea of where they become unreliable.

But again, how do you know how its been treated?

Theres no reason it shouldnt last a long time and many miles... but its down to how well its maintained.

My piaggio has done nearly 15,000 miles and it is still as sweet as ever. Depends how the bike had been rode previously.

Also remember to use good oil! dont use fully synthetic 2 stroke racing oil which the scooter boys think is best.. its a waste of money and useless on a 50cc. Just get a fairly good quality type. Silkolene do very good oils.

Hi.

The Senda really is a great bike. I rode mine to a pretty high mileage last year and it didnt want to give up, just kept on going. The bikes themselves are reliable enough and dont need a rebuild for quite a while, unless something goes terribly wrong in the bottom end.

Chances are, it'll be in need of some new piston rings, which are neither expensive or difficult to fit. If you do get the bike, just take care of it, run it on decent oil, always let it warm up before thrashing. Good maintenance will keep it a good runner. Thumbs Up

As for a site, try www.bike-spares.co.uk. I bought a few things from him while I had my Derbi. Good prices, good service, quick delivery. He's very experienced with Derbi's, so send him an e-mail or give him a call and he'll be able to help you.

Thanks very much, really useful.
Also, what about price?
Ive been looking around at similar bikes but havent really found much.
Its a 2000 Derbi senda R with 15000 miles in good condition? Is £600 a reasonable price or is it overpriced?
Thanks.

£600 seems very cheap for a 2000 model. I rarely see them go for less than £900~. Make sure you inspect the bike thoroughly because there could be underlying problems. Either way, if the bike is in decent condition, it would be worth the £600. That way you should be able to spend a little on new rings etc.

A friend rode his GPR to 30,000km's before he finally sold it on, so they are fairly tough bikes if treated right. Thumbs Up

If you do change the rings n that, REMEMBER to stuff rag around the piston when the barrel is off so no bits of piston ring fall into the bottom of the engine (if you accidently snap one)
