Advice on er 5's please, I have a 2500 mile 2000 bike, what should i especially look for and any things i should look out for ie. preventative medicine! Mine only goes up to 105mph is that normal, its no where near the redline. What oil is best and should i change the oil every 2000 miles? should I change the coolant often?

Well the ER-5 likes new oil regularly, and every 2000 miles is what I do on my GS500 and it keeps it running sweet.

As for coolant every year would be sufficient.

Be aware on the ER-5 that they have weak electrics and the rectifiers go often taking out batteries with them too. The first sign of this can be poor starting.

Also be aware that servicing must be kept up on the EX500 the ER uses and if its negelected it can self destruct in a few thousand miles taking the whole top end out!

And 105MPH is very slow for it unless its restricted to 33BHP, if not then about 115MPH is the top speed but it would take along time for it to get there!

Hi Guys, a couple of months ago I was considering the Hyosung Comet 250cc but unfortunately the dealer sold it on the day I was going to get it.

Now I'm lost between the Hyosung Comet 650cc and the Kawasaki ER-5 500cc.

I like the Hyosung 650cc more as it has a nicer shape, and seems technologically more advanced, considering the engine is a V-TWIN whilst the Kawasaki has a 2 cylinder in line engine, which is less efficient. Besides that, considering that there is only 150cc difference between the two, the Hyosung has approximately 79BHP (if I'm not mistaken) whilst the Kawasaki only has 49BHP.

However, having said all this, Kawasaki have a much greater name and benefit of a greater popularity... thus my dilemma!!

Can you give me your advice please? Anybody?

Thanks

Get test rides on both and see which *you* like best.

There are pros and cons to each, in the end it comes down to which one will make you happy.

What's normal shop policy for test rides? There's a GPz which has been in the CMC near me for at least a year. If (once I've got my licence sorted out) I went and got a test ride on it, with absolutely no intention of buying it would there be any problem? Of course they don't need to know. Smile They're just a little overpriced in that place, but I'd like to see if the GPz is really what I want.

Varies from shop to shop, person to person really. All you can do is ask, but it's probably worth at least pretending you're interested in buying it. Smile

Hi shaun.er5.

Here are two er5 owner forums where lots of similar topics are discussed:

Bikers Oracle - It's still a bit quiet since its quiet new.

Wanadoo Owners forum - Do a search on keywords that you're seeking advice on on this forum and you'll find lots. Great knowledge base:up:

I second marks claim about the remus exhaust for the er5, its great, the one with the removable baffles would be even better, but I 've just got the standard grand prix one. (Mark, when you going to take the baffles out, just for a wee test Smile)

The original exhaust will rust to pieces, no matter how much you look after it, so start saving for another in a year or two. Sad

The rectifier unit should be replaced about the 15k miles unit (£60) as if it fails, it'll take out the battery and other bits, costing a lot more than £60. No idea why it does this, but should you find yourself approaching the 15k mark, don't gamble it, get a new rec.!!!

Well, apparently, here in Malta, the custom is to start the bike only after someone would have purchased it. Both Hyosung and Kawasaki are in the showroom without oil in the engine, disconnected battery and so on...
