Am I being daft?

I've found the bike I'm looking for, at well under book price, (cat D write off, Ignition barrel, light panel scuffing, all fully repaired), it's in excellent condition, low miles, rides perfectly, runs great, good alarm, to be sold serviced and 12 months MOT, and they've even offered me a good price for the Triumph (which is rare at this time of the year).

Problem is......... it's red.
The paint is beautiful, miles deep, and well finished, and the bike does look good overall........but it's bloody red, and I don't do red..........

This was the only thing that stopped me signing up today, am I just being daft?

I'm off to work to have a bit of a think about it........But what would you do?

Not daft at all. Afterall if you are not fully satisfied with what you bought, then the bike will never provide you with the satisfaction that you crave. Smile

Remember its you who will be going into the garage to behold your bike every day before you ride it.

Its you who will be thinking 'are they looking at me cause they like it or cause i look like cr*p?'

And its you who will want to keep it smart and nice to look at or thrash it cause you dont care.

I think aesthetics are the first things you should look at in a bike, since afterall if you simply wanted an engine with wheels you'd buy a clapped out CG or something that runs everytime but looks like scrap.

If you dont like the look of it, dont even go for it. Why spend so much money on something that isnt just what you want?

If there is one out there there'll be another, and another a different colour.

Remeber its you who will be riding your bike every day.

Its you who will be thinking 'whoa, this is fun' or 'this bike is a boring pile of cr*p'.

And its you who will want to enjoy thrashing it when you have the opportunity.

I think performance/price are the first things you should look at in a bike, since afterall if you simply wanted a shiny bike you'd buy a clapped out bike that doesn't run that you could paint it to look pretty.

If you like the bike, go for it. Why not spend so much money on something that is what you want?

This may be the only one out there at such a price.

Smile Very Happy Smile

Personally, while looks do bother me more than I might admit, I would always go for a decent vehicle over what it looks like.
Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so that gorgeous woman/man that sees you on it tomorrow might think it looks great in red Smile.
If it's a decent price you should be able to factor in a paint job with the money saved. You could also get some spare panels and keep your ones to replace incase you crash.

(he butchered my beautiful post... Crying or Very sad )

Smile Laughing Smile

Yeah thought of that after posting, if the amount you save is considerable and you are really against red... then see if you make a loss on it by painting it up.

Remember that an unofficial scheme could ward of potential buyers in the future, as they will wander why it needed painting if it was in excellent condition beforehand.

Me confused, you know the exact make an model you want?

Thats what i assumed with my post, if so then my statement stands. Dont settle for less on something so pricey that you will keep a long time... you'll regret it and that 'perfect' machine in the garage wont be so perfect.

If you arent definite on the year/make/model then G is completely right, the type of bike, performance and ridability take preference to colour!

And of course depends how much it bugs you... if you HATE it like Arnie Swarz would a bright pink Limo... then dont buy it cause you'll only spend your time wishing it was another colour.

But if it looks smart and you just arent a red person, it may well grow on you.

When i first wanted to get a bike i thought "any colour thats not red or yellow, not silver either.." first bike i got... red... second bike... red... my third bike in as many years... silver...

In every case its grown on me (black is what i'd have idealy) i draw the line at yellow though Very Happy

Suppose how long you have to keep looking for a bike, if you dont NEED one then keep looking, otherwise you might end up kicking yourself... its a very good time to be buying a bike though.

If it is Well below book price, then a few 100 sqid aint gona hurt for a respray is it? Wink

I could do with respraying a pannel on my moped, It is the rear left pannel (300ml of paint should do it)
Some wanker has keyed it while its been parked in middle of Chatham...

Problem is, its not a standard Peugeot colour, its had a complete respray in its time and it is a Metalic semi 2 tone colour...

Its gona cost a fortune init!?!

I think you'll suit red. Like Bendy said, it'll grow on you!

Only thing is, it's not Triumph's Nuclear Red is it? 'Cos we all know that's really pink, and although I could picture you on a red bike I really can't imagine you on a pink one no matter how hard I try......well, not without giggling anyway!

Yeah, but it depends on the paint scheme. I phoned up Dream Machine for a quote a year or so back and they wanted £800! Shocked

That's because you phoned up an expensive company. From a friendly local guy/gal and you should be able to get it done a lot cheaper.

I've not been that impressed by the quality of seen from Dream Machine either (was done for a shop though Smile ).

Yeah, I know they're at the top end of the cost bracket but I've always been pretty impressed by their work. I've had one bike done by them, and Jeanette's VFR was their work.

Cool Think Ferarri red Wink . I know it's a weird color but I find it to make cars look sporty. It should work on bikes too.

I don't do red either. No matter the finish, I just hate the colour. Childhood trauma 1977; Red leather seats in my Dad's old car, middle of summer, me vomiting down Dad's suede jacket.

Get the thing and paint it to make it the bike you really want. You are half way there.
I do understand where colour can make or break your ....... well, anything really. It's all a matter of taste and you will feel much better if you get your stuff sorted out to the colour scheme you want.
I don't really give a toss about it myself 'cos I just want to get back on the road as cheaply as poss. Thats how I managed to get a load of brand new gear at ridiculously low prices. The owners had changed bikes and boots, lid, gloves and leathers didn't match.
I have in my mind the perfect bike colour scheme, but until I can afford it, anything goes.

I agree with Bendy.

I when I was looking for a replacement Blade I found a yellow one that was too good to turn down. Yellow = 3rd favorite colour and they only made 3 colours.

Every day I ride it it gets better and the colour's a grower, especially in the summer!

I'd buy the bike, take of all the plastics off, scurry down to a decent paint shop and get them all sprayed. ps (Black is the best colour). Wink

Probably cost £100, £200 tops. Something like that. They will be professional standard.

Put them back on and the bike will look like new, and you should be very happy. Mr. Green

EDIT: Didn't think about the tank (may cost a bit more) ... Just buy it and ride a red bike, as long as it rides well. Thumbs Up

I wonder if bikes get the same treatment as cars with insurance. Apparantly red cars are more expensive to insure.

If you rate too many posts at once it removes them because of what some people did rating loads of posts. Supid IMO but thats the way the cookie crumbles my friend. Razz
