Been humming and harring about trying a super moto for a while, currently have 2 very similar bikes (GSXR and CBR) which seems a waste.

anyone got any tales of woe, advice or experience? anything at all would be tops as its a whim and i've not really done any research yet.

Ride one before you buy one to make sure you like it.

They aren't "fast" and you can't ride them on the roads you normally ride on the GSXR, they aren't practical and need a lot of maintenance (well depends what you go for really.. )

So many people come off their GSXR1YZXR 10,000 and then get bored after 5 minutes when they realise the SM doesn't do warp factor 9 and needs the oil changing every 5 minutes Laughing

Depending on what you want to use it for will depend whether a SM is for you and what type of moto (race spec, street moto etc)

cheers Yams,

i'm not after "fast" just an alternative ride to what i have available at the moment. i'll still have the gixxer for that pucker clenching warp factor 9 Rolling Eyes .

from what i can gather supermoto's are fun in a completely different way. its to be a toy, not a daily rider so i guess high running costs (i take it thats what you mean by maintenance) arent as much of an issue than they otherwise would be.

i just want a fun alternative a guess

Ahhh I see, more sensible then, a lot of people sell their GSXR's etc and buy a supermoto because it'll "save their licences" then they get bored of no speed and done by the police for doing wheelies through town Laughing

If you only want a toy then you can basically go for whatever supermoto floats your boat. Race spec or street moto. Even with little riding it'll still need regular oil changes and bolts replacing/tightening etc.

The EXC / WR / Husabergs etc range are competition bikes and much fun Very Happy or KTM LC4, MZ Baghira etc are more street based machines with bigger service intervals - But not as fun!

I have an 01' WR400 with loads of spares for sale if interested send me a PM..

CCM640e - the one with the rotax engine.

I know someone with one, PHWOAR!!!!

Sounds unbelievable, comes up off the throttle in 1st, 2nd and 3rd -(if you dab the brakes and nail the throttle when the susp is on its way back up)

With an aftermarket can it sounds like a shotgun on the overrun, hoooo i want one!
Sorry about the poor image, his is the only one on bikepics. Ill get some more pics when its stopped snowing so i can go out on the bike.

They fall apart, cheapily made, called CCM Laughing CCM went into receivership, but have recently been bought out but their future is still shady, they aren't the best quality bikes and definetly not the best performers. Ask on any supermoto forum (except for CCM boards of course!) what people think and you'll get a 80% at least negative review...

oh ok.

They use wp forks and shocks i was told (well on this model anyway) have a remus system as standard. They use lots of good quality parts too, and i believe the owner of this one has had no problems with it yet.

Anyhoo, you ride a sm and probably know a lot more than me about them, so ill take your word for it. Thumbs Up

A friend of mine bought a brand new 604DS and it fell apart, he had it on the road about 3 months in total of a years ownership, rest of time it was in for warranty work Laughing

I don't know fully as I've never owned one, but judging by all the reviews and peoples comments I've read over the past year or so, then I wouldn't buy a CCM in this lifetime.

cheers all, all taken into consideration and i'm thinking KTM dukeII. had a look on the supermoto forums and CCM's seem to have a bad rep, that and what yams has said about the company having a few problems makes me nervous.

the more i think about it the more i decide i cant live without one (major flaw with petrol heads i think).

yams, i take it its just a case of swapping the tyres over and your ready for green laning etc.... do you have to play with the suspension very much?

i've had a fair bit of experience with crossers in the past and miss the thrill.

The way I see it:
The supermoto will do similar to a sports bike, just slower. Which means that when you're ragging it through the gears you're not seeing double figures nearly as quickly.
For the same reason I've got myself an rs250 for road fun; otherwise staying anywhere near speed limits was rather boring on my zx9.

Personally theres more to supermoto than just slower fun. Yes you can still rag them and have fun at slower speeds but it means that you change the roads you ride on and you'll end up going FASTER than you ever did with your sports bike. Go down a tight twisty road, not an A or B, find a country lane ... ride your GSXR down it and you'll go slow.. get used to a supermoto then ride down it and stop at the other end to think about it and you'll realise you're going hell of a lot faster than before. You just ride different roads on supermotos...

I use mine for stunting mostly and in 2005 my main bike useage is going to be green laning, supermoto track days and stunting... I don't enjoy rideouts as much as I used to any more. Off roading and track days is where it is at - if supermoto is for you, you'll find yourself selling the gixer and buying a KTM Razz

Another thing worth noting, sports bike track day = £150 for 6 sessions etc, supermoto track day at a top SM track = £50 for the whole day, usually open track Cool

Duke 2 is a nice bike, normally the bike that sports bike riders get when they decide to go to supermotos Laughing but not a bad bike ... the duke 2 is the pansy version of the LC4 ... that's what most people seem to say anyway Wink but a good bike, I like them Thumbs Up

Swapping wheels and go off road? Not on a Duke 2 mister!! Laughing

Rift, that DRZ looks quite nice, they aren't the fastest bikes going though, I don't see many DRZ's racing either, plenty green laning though, they are excellent enduros, bit heavy and way too tall for me Crying or Very sad but they are good bikes Thumbs Up very reliable too actually, TBH I'd get one for green laning if I could get my fooking feet down on the things Laughing they are taller than most other bikes Crying or Very sad

I think it depends how you rode the sports bike in the first place Razz.

I've never ridden country lanes (especially those with hedge rows) that fast, while Dusty was usually faster than me in such situations.

I would suspect it's more getting confident in a bike etc. The supermoto should be able to turn in faster, but apart from hairpins, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Sports bikes can turn pretty fast with a shove on the bars.

When it comes down to it ... it's not all about speed and shit, just ride one and see what you find more enjoyable. You may love it, you may not. Just get a test ride and find out as everyone has different opinions and to be honest it doesn't matter what is faster or what handles better... it's what you enjoy most.

For me I used to be sports bikes blah blah blah.. now I'd much rather have a supermoto, any day of the week, as I do. Razz

Roll on 2005, trackdays, green laning, enduros, stunting around and MX tracks. Mr. Green

The ONLY thing I don't like about supermotos/enduros.. is that you can't do any distance stuff really... But that's not the end of the world as everything else makes up for that.
