Recently I have been noticing that my bike (Yamaha TDR 125) has been getting harder and harder to start, which I presume is due to the colder/damper weather. The starter works fine, but the engine just won't catch until after at least 20+ goes of turning the starter over. When it does catch it will run for a second or so, then cut out. I then have to re-start it, then it runs for a few seconds more then dies again. It often cuts out about 5 or 6 times before it will actually stay running, opening the throttle even slightly while it is doing this makes it cut straight out again. Once I have managed to get it going it will be a bit sluggish initially, but then it runs fine when it has warmed up a little. To start it I have the choke fully out. Is there something wrong in terms of what I am doing to try and start it, or is there something I need to have a look at on the bike? Or is this just par for the course with a 2 stroke which lives out in the open? I think I'm starting to annoy the neighbours by spending 15 minutes turning the thing over then another 10 minutes running up and down the slight incline which I live on in a vain attempt to bump start the thing.

Sounds just like you need the choke fully out.

I do have the choke out fully when i start it. I've also tried without the choke and with 3/4 choke, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

My speedfight100 does kind of the same thing when its cold in the mornings but not as much as yours. It starts, then cuts out (even when i give it a bit of throttle) then dies again.

I think our problem is the cold... Rolling Eyes

As what Satan said. I would recommend you give it a new spark plug because not long ago, you said you had problems of it burning rich (or something similar after you opened the power valve fully.) Its possible that the plug has become fouled or could just be very oiled up.

Either way, a new plug is not more than a few £ so it wouldnt hurt to try a new one. Smile

I did have some problems after I had tried to derestrict it, so I reversed what I had done and put a new plug, so the plug is only a week old. I've been having real problems starting it for a month or so now, but even before that it would often take a good few attempts before it would get going.

Although I really love the bike when it is going I'm going to sell it soon, pass my test and hopefully get something bigger. Roll on March when I should have the cash ready Very Happy
