Well, after over 5 years of commuting 45 miles each way to work I finally managed to put a bike down the road Embarassed

It was a nice dry morning (although cold), and I was taking it fairly easy on my way to the office at about 06:30. Then on the approach to a roundabout, right in the braking area (and I was braking early too), there was a 100yd long patch of ice on my side of the road. The bike was on the floor before I could even react to it, and proceeded to slide the whole length of the ice onto the roundabout, and stop right in front of the oncoming traffic!
Fortunately, the oncoming 4*4 stopped (no ice on the roundabout) and the driver jumped out to check I was OK and helped me pick the bike up (he was a biker too).

Once the bike was off the road I made a few phone calls (recovery people/MrsHippy/Work), while watching nearly every car coming down the hill to the roundabout sliding all over the place. MrsH drove out to me with a thermos of coffee and somewhere warm to sit Thumbs Up . After about an hour of waiting and 17 cars sliding into the kerb, a gritter wagon comes down the hill (ironic or what?), and he too slides on the ice!

Eventually a nice recovery chap arrives in his van with it's pneumatic rear suspension and we stick the bike in the back. He rides as well as recovers and I've pointed him here, so we may get a new member out of it Smile

So, the damage?
Snapped foot-peg, bent gear shifter, chamfered clutch leaver and bar end, bent bars, some scratching to the indicator pod and tank, and a crack in the foot peg hanger.
The worst part of this is that it was MrsHippys bike! Crying or Very sad
We have taken so photos and I'll get MrsH to put them up here as soon as she can.

The moral of this?
Even the most experienced riders get bitten in the arse every now and then, but any crash you can walk away from unhurt is not a bad crash.

Stay safe in the cold weather guys Smile

Let me think - Sept 11th 2004, Marinello, Italy.
Watched (In fact videoed) a 1000 MV Augusa F1 high side, smashing the whole left side of the bike - including the rear wheel.
Rider had a dislocated shoulder.

Now that was a worse crash than yours Smile

Theres no need for that. Ash is a student with very little money, binning a brand new bike (quite badly) in my eyes is very bad. Its just lucky he was not injured, not un-grateful. I think you need to check up on your dictionary definitions.

Lets just settle this once an for all if you walk away allive and in one peice from anything you consider yourself lucky - full stop.

The first thing I said wen the phone went off at 6.20 was 'are you ok?' even before I heard his voice. The damage to the bike was irrelavant at the time - i didnt ask if the wheel had snapped. I am now sad that my Rosie is all bashed up Sad but I still have a hippy and all in one peice.

As for our continuing bad niggly constant but not deadly serious bad luck I am buying lots of lottery tickets as I figure the good luck must have got stuck in a bottle neck somwhere and will flood out all at once.

Looks like I will have to drive the car after all Sad Curse you four wheeled contraption!

Hi. A friend of mine rides here in Vermont, USA all year around on his Yamaha XS1100 almost every day and has yet to crash. He is on his way to Iraq so I think he is not afraid of crashing. Or maybe he is hoping?

It should indeed cost less, but Benelli can get parts to me in a few days, I've waited 18 months for a clip to come from Cagiva in the past Sad

No, Benelli are quite quick - usually within a week. I've heard good things about Ducati too. Seems to be mainly Cagiva Confused
