I want to help prevent my new exhaust from corroding this winter.

Someone on BCF told me to put WD40 on it. I tried this but it just smoked everywhere when it got hot.

Aer there any other ways apart from painting it as it is chrome plated...

Thanks

What about silicone spray? Or is this no good on hot areas?

Only really keeping it polished to stop the rust spots from developing and taking a hold will do the trick. I've not had any cleaning kit for a while, so I shudder to think what the underside of my exhausts are like. Embarassed

Something I discovered was the unexpected benefit of parking under a group of trees. As there are piles of dry dead leaves everywhere and my bike was filthy, I needed something to wipe most of the crap off. Handfuls of dry leaves work really well! You can even polish rust spots away with them! Obviously they won't absorb the crap like a cloth will, but you can get most of it off.

chrome plated?? No idea to be honest, other than just when leaving it sitting and its cool, yes, put some sort of rust preventative on it like WD40. Yes it cooks off when you start the engine.

Spit and polish, and WD40, I had a cruiser and rode it through winter. It was fine and it was a chinese make so I'm sure yours should be okay by doing this.

Either was it loads and dry it each time. Or if its not too bad you can just leave the engine running so it evaporates off any moisture, but that still leaves salt and grime.

I tried using chain wax one year, it was better than WD40, as it didn't burn off, but it made a sticky mess.

With my expansion chamber i just accept that it WILL rust and remove it twice a year to bead blast it and respray it.

I'm sure I said this before. Scottoiler FS365 or you can use Motorex 645 Clean and Protect. To clean chrome use pink Windolene.

Buy a tube of Autosol and polish it once a week if you use it every day or once a month if only used at the weekends, takes 5-10 minutes. Makes the exhaust nice and shiny and removes rust spots and most scratches, best of all a tube lasts absolutely forever Smile

Chrome doesnt actually rust, its gets very pitted if its poor quality and the metal underneath rusts which makes the chrome bubble and flake off.

https://www.qualitychrome.co.uk/chroming.htm

Ring any chromer and ask them about cleaning and see if they recommend autosol.

since i'm still skint, i'm using the rest of my WD40 to coat the exhaust. Leave it on overnight and make sure you apply it when the pipes are cold. Scottoiler FS365 is pretty recommended too. IMO, i don't get much discoloratio from WD - all my other parts have remained satin and rust free, such as exhaust guard, frames, bolts etc.

I can still recommend using WD40 on the exhaust my be sensible when and where you apply it. Oh- to stop rusting even more, make sure that you hose the bits down with COLD water if you've ridden through a salt bath to stop the chlorine in the salt reacting with the surface of the metal.

I always find that a 50/50 mix of H2O and Sodium Chloride work well, especially when applied with a wire scourer Mr. Green

Please, please dont do that

Im guessing you have the Speedfight 2?
Doesnt that have a Chrome cover, with basic metal underneath?
If so, leave the cover off over winter, and just try keeping the exhaust clean. That way, even if the exhaust does get corroded, you can slip the cover back over it, and hide it

Ive got a Technihas RS70 pipe and its just clear lackered... Its a split manifold pipe tho so all I do is unblot the two giant bolts and the pipe comes away and leaves the manifold hose still atached to the engine so I can remove my pipe in 5 minutes without breaking the gasket Laughing

I just take mine off once a wet week and spray it all around with carb/brake cleaner and wipe it off. This removes the corrosion... Then cote it in WD and leave to dry... Once its evapourated it isnt wet, so it doesnt cook, But when it evapourates it leaves the rust prevention chemical on the pipe, so it protects it for good week...

Its only a 15 minute job on a Sunday but it keeps it looking good Mr. Green

Doesnt changing an exhaust involve welding?

The one ive got on my Speedfight 100cc is welded on the pipe. I would love to get a new exhaust, because the current one looks like a lump of black-painted rust (and it stinks of burning paint Mr. Green)

Very often you change the downpipe(s) too, as the system is often one piece. You can get cans which slip on and are held on with a clamp.

Ah, didnt know that. Ill have to look into that.

Sorry to steal focus on the thread, but are pipes universal, or do I have to buy one that fits... wherever it fits? Smile

Also, any good makes to look out for, and any to avoid (I want to stay on the side of legality, so no race cans)

You have to buy a pipe to fit your specific model. I heard technigas were bad and rust easily (right after ive just gone and spent £80 on a new technigas Laughing ) Thats why i need to prevent rush as much as possible.
