PostPosted: 17:15 - 29 Dec 2004    Post subject: Tyres (advice appreciated) Reply with quote

After being used for work and casual use for the best part of the year my tyres are knackered to say the least, so I have the choice of fitting new tyres and since I'm stuck with my current bike for the best part of the rest of the year, I want to buy some half decent rubber.

So my choices appear to be:

BRIDGESTONE 010/020/014

DUNLOP D207/D207RR

MICHELIN TX15/25 HI-SPORT or MACADAM 90

AVON AZARO

Any opinions/experience/advice on which to go for is greatly appreciated, since frankly I don't have a clue.

Well bridgestone, dunlop, and michelin are all good makes, all used in racing so the make is good. Myself ive never head of avon but my friend runs michelins on his honda hornet 600 and he says there fine, he does a lot of fast acceleration and heavy breaking even in the wet.

Apart from that im useless, sorry.

can't seem to find what bike you ride...
so i'll give you my opinion Thumbs Up

bt020 rear bt010 front = the bollocks Thumbs Up

haven't tried the 207's but i have tried the 208's = what a load of sh-t ...i never ever felt comfortable on these tyres and it was a blessing when the rear went bald at 3000 mile.

went back to 020 / 010 = pukka stuff

my front went bald and they didn't have a 010 but offered me an 014 and told me it was the replaicment for the 010...so far so good but i need to test them in the rain Thumbs Up ..

hope this helps

Oops yeh, GS500 Confused

It did help thanks. If you could PM me or something when you've run 'em in the rain to let me know how they are I'd really appreciate it since these seem to be top of the list so far.

Cheers. Smile

I've got the BT010/020 combination on my Cat and have done for about 2 years. Can't fault the tyres, the grip is good in the wet and great in the dry, and I get about 5k miles out of them before they need replacing.

BT45s were recommended for the CB500, I'd imagine they'd work well on the GS500 too.

010 / 012 / 014 may not be recommended on the GS cos it doesn't have the power to heat them up properly. I've certainly seen people being advised to steer clear of them on sports 400s, which are more powerful than the GS500.

I've got avons fitted to my ZXR. Never had any problem with them, I think they are an excellent choice and have never come anywhere near the limit.

IMO:

DUNLOP D207/D207RR

Don't go for 207's total shite especially in the wet.

BRIDGESTONE 010/020/014

020/014 offer good grip both wet and dry and seen to last a while BUT the 010 offers a lot more grip both wet and dry but only last around 5000miles depending on your riding.

*edit* that's on a 600

Well for a start they don't make BT010's/014/020's in the size that will fit a GS500.

And my recommendation having owned a GS500 for 2 years is Bridgestone BT45's, they're excellent in the dry and brilliant in the wet.

Other considerations would be the Dunlop Arrowmax range, the Bridgestone Exedra, Metzeler ME33/55 And Avon HKM AM51/52. Non are as good on the GS500 as the BT45 in my opinion, and some are positively scary in the wet like the Dunlops!

Just go down to your local tyre place and see what they recommend or have an offer on really.

Yeh these are still in the running purely because I'm a bit of a tightass on the quiet and the guy down the local bike shop reckons he can get 'em real cheap. Cheers Smile

Oh and yeh, yellow tyres Thumbs Down

Bad in the wet seems to be the general opinion for those, so I'll be givin' them a skip it seems. As for the durabilty I might rack up a massive 50 miles in a week these days, so it's not really an issue.

Yeh BT45s seem to be the choice at the minute. So if they don't make BT010/20/14 for GS size wheels, why are they listing 'em here

https://www.motorbike-tyres.com/

and on another site I forgot to bookmark. If I'm wrong feel free to point it out.

Thanks.

Well the rims on the GS500 can take a 110/10-17 on the front and a 130/70-17 on the rear (a 140/70-17 or 140/80-17 will fit also), and as far as I know no manufacturer makes a sports tyre in that size let alone recommend fitting them to a GS500.

As has been pointed out a Sport radial tyre would not get warm enough due to the low power of the GS500, which would cause major grip problems in the dry never mind the wet!

Also the reason why BT45's are well suited to the GS, is they warm up quickly and have a hard compound in the middle where the GS spends most of its time upright in traffic, though they do have a soft compund on the shoulder for added corner grip which give them good feel in bends etc.

Kool, ta. Thumbs Up

BT45s it is then, unless the bike shop can get those Avons for pocket change.

Me personally, ummm, 'bout 6000. I bought the bike second hand though so the tyres already had a few miles on.

Riding comfort, high-speed stability and long mileage are basic "functions", and all are needed in touring type tyres. The brand-new BT-020 cleared every technical high level goal, most notably the unsurpassed wet performance. But this time, Bridgestone wanted to improve the appearance of its touring tyres plus offer a safe and comfortable feeling for a better experience. BT-020 is Bridgestone's proposal. BT-020: The New Vision of Touring.
The BT54 based Silica compound offers exceptional wet performance and longer mileage.
Designed with CTDM technology, the larger crown radius and unique anti-shock profile secures improved high-speed stability.
Bridgestone patented Kevler Mono Spiral Belt for riding comfort.
Two centre lines and high-angled grooves effectively remove water. Also in front, the skilful placements of directional and anti-directional grooves form lug blocks for traction (grip). Rear tyres offer form and function. The main diagonal grooves remove water, optimise rigidity, and at the same time give an artistic look to the new Battlax. The thin grooves in the tread edge hook in corners and give feedback to riders during cornering.
