Weirdly about 20minutes before i was thinking "i really need to sort out the AA membership thing again soon..." after droping my girlfriend off i was on my way home on dark country roads, engine thuding allong on one cylinder, i plod at 30 to the nearby golf course and phone my dad for an escort home (no credit on my phone, if it didn't make it home i'd be in serious poo) i spent a few minutes reving it in the car park and upseting derbyshires elite snobs, the second cyclinder kicking itself back into action after a rest then dieing again...

What had happened... The CDI unit is housed under the seat, because of a slightly silly design fault + my not insignificant weight is resting on top of the cdi units, this makes the not particuarly well soldered board bend enough to break the connection, meaning the rear cylinder is off but sometimes kicks in, interesting rideing with your engine going to from half to full power in a split second completely at random...

I know it is the left of the two units because

a: its not makeing the same ticking noise as the other
and
b: because the tacho works from on of the two plugs on the rear, which comes on and off with the unit going on and off.

So...

Should i phone the dealership and tell them exactly what it is, explain its the cdi, tell them i will fit it if they get a new one

or play dumb, get them to pick it up and find it themselfs and hope it dosent take long to get a new part

or tell them what it is, find a cdi from a breakers and get them to pay for it and me fit it, meaning it will cost them less anyway.

The problem was sorted in later models where the rubber mounting is different, when i get another working one i'll take them off the mounting and tape em up good while i look for the modified mount.

I'm hopeing its sorted as soon as possible with minimum hassle, i'd prefer to get it from a breakers and pick it up myself the same day, get the to pay for it and have it sorted by dinner time...

Sound reasonable?

Probably easiest to ring them to let them know what has happened, asking when it can be collected by them with a courtesey bike for you to use when it is being fixed under warrenty. Say you've spoken to a mechanic friend who thinks it sounds like the CDI is broken.

I'd expect their warrenty policy is very strict, they're not going to be willing to pay for some part which you've told them is broke and needs to be replaced under the warrenty. They'll at least want to inspect it themselves to see whats wrong with it before paying for it to be fixed and I'd just let them fix it with genuine news parts, don't even suggest to them about finding one from a breakers as then if they fit that and something goes wrong then they'll try and resolve themselves of all blame as the problem is obviously caused by the CDI which is from Jim's Bike Breakers so go take it up with them.

Ring them in the morning, get them to lend you a courtesey bike and take yours in to be fixed ASAP.

Is it a main dealership (ie. Honda, Yamaha etc) or some smaller local one?

Its from a smaller one, ive had all three of my bikes from there, i'm hopeing i wont need to get shitty with them.. they have sold allot of bikes to people i know and are good to deal with.. not backally crudmerchents (though theres a fair share of biger places with a bit of a reputation)

I'd be quite happy to resolder the connectors on the cdi, in fact i'm hopeing i can keep the dead one for a spare... obviously i'm not about to dremel the box to death when i can get a replacement off them Very Happy

The warrenty lasts another month, its going to be a tremendous hassle leting them cart it off for a week i reckon... they could come and look it over and i can show them whats up, they get the part ordered.. sorted.. i hope Sad

The warrenty is likely to be with a third party company so everything will need (if it is with a third party company) need to be done by the shop. Ring them in the morning, see what they say and offer to do and if they turn around and offer to fix it in three weeks time or something else daft then suggest about them looking at it quickly to confirm that your mechanic friend is right and that they order you a CDI and you fit it, if that doesn't work you can then try suggesting ordering one from a breakers and you fitting it.

You don't want to suggest getting it from a breakers too quickly as they might offer you a new one.

Third party warrenties are as shitty as hell. I had one, the the warrenty company said i didn't, the shop i got it from said i did. so, i couldn't use it (for the VERY few things it actualy covered on a small capacity 2t) untill all the problems were sorted concerning IF i actually had one or not.

Because i lived the other end of the country to the shop i purchased the bike from, i had to get the work carried out by a local shop, who stripped it all down, denied there was a problem, gave it a FULL service while there and charged me for it all...

(For those interested, i told them my head gasket was blown/leaking as i had the coolant tank overflowing when the bike was started/reved... But no, they thought my problem was due to the air filter being dirty, or the carb needing stripping and cleaning or a new spark plug or some new gear oil, or maybe my low brake fluid was to blame... )

That warrenty was the biggest waste of £200 ever.

But, that was my first bike i had bought, and i've learnt alot since then. Got luck getting the parts out of them, and i hope you get a better service than i did!
