I fancied one of those mono back backs, you know the ones with the single strap. So I went off to JJB and picked myself up a nice one and quite cheap too, thought I had a bargin.

One the way home I thought I'd just see if the local Honda shop was open to get a visor bag too. Turn on to the A27 dual carriageway and start my way down the slip road, get pissed off with the fiesta slowing me down so I nail it and undertake it.

I've no idea how fast I was going but a couple of seconds later I no longer feel the back pack (empty) buffeting. I then raised my hand to my chest and realised that the strap (held by velcro) had come undone and my new purchase had flown off somewhere behind me Sad

Luckily I was well clear of the traffic on the slip road and I had to circle around and park up on the slip road to recover my backback (which hadn't been run over from the look of it).

I guess these things are only safe up to a certain speed? I'm looking at getting it stitched together to avoid any further embrassing moments.

I wouldn't reckon anything held by velcro is designed to take speed, or much weight for that matter.

OK, so let me get this straight.

You bought a backpack, which had a single strap, held together by velcro...

And you were SURPRISED when you lost it on the road? Shocked

Personally I don't trust my twin strap rucksack unless the waist strap is done up too. IMO you were very lucky. What would have happened if the backpack had become tangled around the rear wheel?

I have a friend who refuses to wear rucksacks on bikes because he knows someone who had their arm ripped off when a loose strap became entangled in their rear wheel. I suppose there is no chance of this happening with that bag!! Wink

What does amaze me is when you see people riding with their bike chain across them, or a spare helmet through their arm! Imagine the damage it'd do it they came off Shocked

You can try wearing the bag on your front, but it all depends on how much you like pies... Wink

But as has been said - you actually thought that velcro was strong?

ive got one of them, useful for very small shopping trips or food missions when you cant be arsed with tankbag

the velcro is the very thing that makes them convenient, its a pain getting two straps on and off with armoured leathers on

however, mine has a waist strap with a quick release buckle, which takes the strain of the velcro somewhat

Just now I just use a regular backpack of the two strap variety, and I do it up very tightly so that if it became loose, I'd feel it. Hasn't let me down so far, 95mph on a naked bike and it stayed put.

Would never even consider taking a chain in the bag though, only for completely and one-off trips. Like last thursday, two cable locks and a chain in my bag.

Not recommended, hurts your shoulders after a while and damn, it would absolutely destroy you if you came off with it on. Crying or Very sad Thumbs Down

I've seen loads of bikers with them on, I can only assume they do a version that doesn't come apart or they don't go that fast. Guess you live and learn Shifty

I use a twin-strip backpack and I do the straps nice and tight. The loose ends are nowhere near long enought to pose a risk, and I regard it was close to impossible for the bag to come off due to the nature of the straps & fasteners (only if the straps got ripped or cut could it come off).

I put my locks in the underseat storage and in the bag I just carry food, magazine, sometimes a bottle of engine oil or wahtever ive just bought.

Works fine for me. Back protector means I cant really feel the backpack but I know it wont come off.

I sometimes use one of those backpacks. Never had any problem with it, but then it has a small capacity so only useful for little things. As long as its done up tightly so no wind can get between it and you, there shouldn't be a problem. I use a normal backpack as I can get more in it!!

I think you've got a great idea there, Hustler. Sewing it together and whatnot. I'm currently counting the days until my next pay check, at which time I'll be able to afford one of these: Fieldsheer XB Backpack

Not much velcro to be had, there. Can you believe the missus doesn't think I truly need one, though?

I've taken a set of tyres to a garage for fitting on the bike once, doing my very best Michelin Man impression. It could have been really funny if I've come off with two tyres round my waist. *boing*

Lol those velcro straps probably fall off at walking speed.

I would only use a double stap bag that either has an additional waist strap or a chest strap. Hopefully my new crumpler backpack has these don't want £5000 worth of photography equipment flying off my back Shocked

Hi,

I travel to college everyday with my double strapped bag and I've never had any problems with it , even when its not tightened up fully.. I know the straps wont cause any damage cause there too short to reach the wheel, floor.

Bye.

Got a bliabong bag ages ago, still use it now.. has carryed a (2litre) bottle of pepsi, dinner for work, other bits, never had it fall off! maybe the velcro is just better i dunno...

It does ok for smaller bits, still wanting a tank bag but they are all a bit pricey Sad will wait till i can get a goodun tho...

For £30 i got a eurohike 35 (litre capacity afaik, theres a 25 too), amazeingly comfy, 2 secureing straps, storm cover, lots of pockets, also helps keep your back warm on long rides Very Happy defenately worth the money for how well made it is...
