Yesterday my Cheetah alarm came from eBay, its looks pretty good but the wires are so short theres no way they'll reach anything on my NSR. Its says that if i have to extend any of the wires to use the correct gauge. The wires have 0.5mm squared written on them, but i cant find any of this wire in my local shops, does anybody have any ideas/websites/shops that might be able to supply some?

You know that white, twin-cored flex that pendant light fittings hang from? That's 0.5mm. If you're not fussed about colours buy a meter of that from Wilkos and strip the cores out. Less than a quid I'll bet.

Hi

From what you say the wire has an area of 0.5mm squared, not a diameter 0f 0.5mm.

All the best

That's what he said Keith. It's usual for wire sizes to be quoted as CSA - cross sectional area - rather than diameter.

And I spelled 'metre' wrong Embarassed

0.4mm thick if my calculation in correct. It might not be though. Smile

pi*r^2=0.5mm^2
(0.5/pi)^0.5=0.3989

Yes, but I would expect the electrical flex for home lighting to be rather heavier than that (nearer 0.75).

All the best

For pendant lamps where the biggest lamp is usually 100 W then 0.5mm twin-core is ok.

For those fancy triple lamp fittings that my missus likes for some reason Rolling Eyes I'd use 0.75mm three-core so you've got an earth for each fitting.

Kettles, immersion heaters etc use 1.5mm three-core.

(Subject to changes in the IEE regs since I last fiddled - but they don't back date them anyway Wink )
