Bad news. A rider has died after a fall.................

Perez, who was competing on his fourth Dakar, suffered a terrible fall on Thursday's 660km stage from Zouerat to Tichit in Mauritania, sustaining extensive internal injuries. "Jose Manuel Perez fell before the first checkpoint," explained race director Thierry Lavigne. "He was airlifted to Zouerat where he was operated upon.

"He was suffering from a serious abdominal traumatism," added Lavigne. "We removed the spleen, the liver and part of one kidney. He was then transferred from Zouerat to Nouakchott by the Mauritanian army where he was then taken to Dakar.

"His condition at this point was stable and we were hopeful of a full recovery. He was transferred by Falcon to Spain, where he arrived at the Alicante hospital on Sunday evening. He was sadly pronounced dead on Monday."

The previous death on the Dakar goes back to 2003 when amateur French rider Bruno Cauvy, 48, dies on the tenth stage between Zilla and Sarir in Libya.

Its a dangerous event you need jangleys of steel to think about doing somehting like this, anyone seen the "bike havoc" dvd... theres a dune that catches out several, they drop about 3meters or more, landing on sand, sand is not a nice thing to be landing on ever...

Is there any torrents of previous years or anything? i dont have a tv, let alone sky! can find many pictures but no vids

Colin McCrae's already crashed out, rolling multiple times after losing control landing a jump, smacking his head and losing his vision. Both he and his co-driver are fine, though I had read that McCrae still has blurred vision and his co-driver was having back problems.

The KTM's are still pissing all over the competition though, they had the first four places the last time I checked.

Tragically another rider has died. Afetr watching it I'm not surprised. Crazy guys.

Italian Fabrizio Méoni has died of his injuries after crashing on Stage 11 of the 2005 Telefónica Dakar Rally on Tuesday between Atâr and Kiffa, in Mauritania.

Méoni crashed at the 184 km mark just after the CP1 control at 10h15 (GMT) Tuesday morning. Race organisers immediately dispatched a rescue helicopter, which arrived on the scene at 10h36 and doctors treated Méoni for 45 minutes. However, at 11h11, he suffered a heart attack and could not be revived.

Fabrizio Méoni, who won the Dakar Rally in 2001 and 2002, and was competing for the thirteenth time, passed the CP1 control in fifth position immediately prior to the crash, and had been lying in second place overall in the 9000 km event. He had celebrated his 47th birthday on 31 December, the day the event began in Spain. Méoni announced his retirement after last year's rally, but decided to have one last attempt at the toughest motorsport event in the world.
